My wife's rod and reel went for a prolonged swim in the surf a couple of days ago. So I dismantled, cleaned etc and while reassembling I decided to investigate a problem which it has had for a long time. That is the age old issue of bail-arms not self returning when winding the reel.
Anyway, examining the mechanism that is supposed to trip the bail-arm It seems somewhat badly designed. See photos below.
Bail-arm in closed position:
Bail-arm in open position:
Bail-arm release rod (the on inside the spring) that is supposed to ride the ramp on the cam and roll the bail-arm elbow around, actually bends before doing so. I have dismantled both of the bailarm elbows to look for obstructions, but it all seems normal to me. The rod in the spring has a small pin which locates into a hole in the cast alloy elbow and that seems to fit just fine.

Interesting observation. I had an early Mitchell that you could not manually close and the bloody thing would stay 1/2 cocked most of the time!!! Nearly chucked it into the brine!!!Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths.

I managed to straighten the bent lever rod and get it working again. For how long I don't know. It seems to be built a bit light for what its expected to do. Reducing the spring pressure by cutting off a couple of coils might help.http://www.paniasurfcasting.org http://www.surfcaster.co.nz
