    The straights are just a name given to a general area of BOP coastline stretching from Otamarakau in the west thru east to the township of Matata.
    The name 'straights' is because of the long runs of uninterrupted shoreline and reasonably straight sections of highway running, for the mostpart, almost parallel to the seashore.There are of course a few bends but calling it "the Matata few slow curving bends and straights" just doesn't sound right.

    Good possies along this stretch are the Otamarakau "sandpit", Hauone, Pikowai, Mimiha, the old Matata "dump", the Domain and of course the mighty Tarawera rivermouth back to the domain.
    The angler's eye and instinct will provide the best spots and his quad will do the rest..

    All these sections of beach are within easy walking access...
    No quad? Too bad.
    As you try to drive on these beaches you may wonder why you don't see many 4x4 tracks right down on the beach...

    the answer will come to you in the end... so might the tide.
