I suspect Geno is right about soft plastic baits. They have already caught something before you open them. I must confess I don't use them, and arn't likely to at $2 a pop. I just hate being bit. I read up on the hype in the fishing mags, and wonder how much those pipers are getting paid. The sucess stories all seem to relate to boat fishing, with not many conclusive results relating to surfcasting.
I've seen and heard about the plastic crabs and they ALL get their legs "nibbled" off. I believe this is unlikely and they probably just disolve or fall off on the retrieve.
I will continue to use real bait because thats how I like to fish and if someone catches more fish on plastics then good luck to them.
I think its more important to plonk your bait in front of a fish than rely on an expensive magic potion that will suck it in from miles away. My two cents. cheers Ed C.
