I know this sounds a bit anti envoiromental, but the more non lethal containers that fall off the Rena, and sink. Are going to push the trawlers out. After all should they snare one, a trawl net costs a lot of money. And a snare up can pull the stern down and then all hell breaks loose. Okay those people have investments in their boats, and familys to support. They will just have to fish elsewhere.

The Nelson Trawllers after they have depleted the local fishery, come down to off shore Westport and go up and down all summer. Targeting the migrating snapper, and whatever else thay can score.

And all those sunken containers are going to become Mini Reefs, as they settle into the sand.
Where ever they have drifted and sank.

Maybe, just maybe, the greatest fishing for a good number of years in the Hawkes Bay and further north, is beacause the Trawlers are tied up.

A contentious issue I know. The Rena is a disaster none of us wanted to even imagine.

I just make this post, as if the fishing continues to improve as it has. Then the fact that inshore trawling has degraded the recreational fishery, should become apparent, and that will be a fact for those that fight for our cause.

We must accept that trawling brings fish to those that do not fish, and rightly so. If Mum wants to buy the family a feed of fish, well good on her.

But don't deplete our ocean to do so.

Damm, now don't hang me. I am making an observation and that is all.

    Cheers Hardy aka Trev
