I fished Santoft over Sunday night with Jock (his two white Abu rods in foreground), Brent, Joe and Elliott. Jock got a wee snapper. There was the odd kahawai. There were crabs, so I used my HB crab-buster rig that floats baits 1.25m off the bottom . I hooked a juvenile black back gull with octopus bait. Lip hooked him, so we got him off and he flew happily away . That bait was well over the wave break at low tide, but I'm guessing I didn't reach deep water beyond the bar. My other catch on that rig was a red cod. It's not the first time I've caught one of those on floated octopus intended for snapper.

We tried north of Wanganui on Monday from midday for an hour or so. We got rained out . No bites.

Only consolation—apparently I didn't miss any significant action in HB.

Will try again. It's a good fishery, but like anywhere, it doesn't produce every night. Brent had caught a 9.24kg and 4 shoalies a few nights earlier. I believe Phill also caught several nice shoalies that night.

    Jock likes the Abu rods.
