    Sorry no photo

Area - castor Bay, North Shore Auckland

Gear - $99 jarvis Walker Combo from Rebel Sports

    Date - Approx 2001

Story - In what feels like a previous life I lived in Auckland for a few years and had a townies job, yep the city with neighbours and traffic lights. As there was no deer shooting with 30 mins of home I took up surf casting. I had a mate that lived on the shore and decided that there must be a fish or too below the cliffs under all those million dollar houses.
Despite being told by ladies walking their handbag dogs and middle age guys running that there was no fish in the area, I caught more fish in the couple of years I was up there than I have in the rest of my life.
Anyway back to the story - my cheapo combo had 10kg line, I had been landing numerous snapper none half that big but I was optimistic especially when I started having major runs and break offs regularly. From memory I respooled my reel 4 times, believing that the freight train taking off with my bait was the grandaddy of all snapper There was no fight just complete dominance, it took and ran, there was no way of slowing this beast any resistance ended in a bust off. This went on for a month or so with almost daily fishing mishs. Finally one day instead of making a run out to sea for reasons unknown the beaset surrendered itself and ran ashore (chased maybe) It was a sting ray over a metre and a half in width. The beast had been slayed. I lost a bit of my fishing mojo after this as I now knew my trophy beast wasn't what I thought it was.
