Hello to everyone, just wondering if anyone knows anything much about Alvey reels and rods as I'm looking to try these out this year. Really interested to know about the quality of the rods available, not wanting to spend top dollar at this point and also about the strength of the reels center pin, will it bend if I hook into something decent ?. Also if anyone's interested i have a hardly used 6500B I would like to trade for a good left side retrieve alvey surf reel

Stefan, I have one, had it for 40 years, still use it occasionally. No moving parts as such so basically bullet proof. I've never had a problem with the pin. My rod is one I built myself to suit the reel. Probably if you go to www.alvey.com.au you will get all the latest and greatest information about them. Tight lines, PhilipTight Lines, Philip Takapau

yeah am interested but as i dont know anything about what they are worth you will have to give us a price. are either of you interested in the shimano. its never caught anything and only been out a handful of times on the beach. I prefer my okuma for casting so the shimano was only a backup

Used to fish with Alveys, bullet proof reel with a machine gun fish alert system. The main problem I found over time was the 1:1 retrieval rate, especially in areas with a bit of foul. Lot of guys like using them off the rocks as they stand up well to the knocks. Another problem I found was finding a good quality rod to team up with them, maybe Phil can help you out there with that one. For surfcasting ideally you will need a rod with a low reel seat and the first eye on your rod should be 75mm in diameter. At one time I had four or five Alveys. Personally didn't like the lever drag models, I recommend if you get one ,get one of the star drag models, 650C5 would be my recommendation. All in all a pretty primitive system but effective, kind of like having a hand line attached to your rod, will give you a different fishing experience, a bit of fun really.

Ask for a look at the Ugly Stik Alvey rods. The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Had one a few years ago teamed up with Kilwell Alvey rod but didn't like it due to constant line twist - even with swivels added to rigs etc - due to casting plane 90 degrees difference to retrieve plane Sold it on TradeMe and bought a pair of Shimano Spheros reels and never had problem since.A woman who has never seen her husband fishing, doesn't know what a patient man she married !

Quite a few of our clubbies at the NSSC (Auckland) are Alvey advocates. They're absolutely bullet proof and you either love or loath them. Hunts Fishing up here stock a good range of reels and rods, Ian'd give you the oil if you rang him Brenton Cumberpatch North Shore Surfcasting Club, 2012 Treasurer.
