Gurnard rigs!

hey guys just after a bit of info,
What do you guys find the best rigs to catch Gurnard on cheers!!

Gary's gurnard rig , hence the name . GK designed it to catch gurnard and they do the business.

A trace with a small bright float, green or red, 40lb flurocarbon trace and 2-3/0 hooks. The alternatice to a flaot is using a needlefish skirt.

I'm interested as to why one would use flurocarbon trace for Gurnard?

Flurocarbon is quite a durable line and its practicly invisable in water i use it and i find it holds its shape better than normal line doesn't kinck up to bad

iv found sometimes ledgers rigs work but are inconsistent

Aaron is bang on. Its much more invisible than normal trace line which turns chalky white after a we while. I use 60lb in general, but drop as light as I can for gurnard, some times 20lb if I have to.

Ledger rigs are good as long as conditions are flat so you can walk right to the waters edge to cast with out getting pumped by big swell which will cat the cast even more.

I guess the other question is what sort of rig is most successful. Historically I've used a running rig with good success but I know many of the gun surfcasters on here use pulleys (for that extra flat water distance maybe?)

They all work. Ledger rigs/flashers in flat calm conditions can see you yanking 2 Gurneys at a time. Im a convert to fluorocarbon now as trace line. I don't use it for its invisibility factor, more its durability and ability to hold its shape without screwing up and getting tangled. Gurneys are suckers for a bit of bling, needle skirts, small flies a bit of movement all helps. Should be a few yanked this weekend.

I suspect that if you drop an acceptable bait in front of their noses, they'll take it. Maybe they'll be more likely to see it if it has some bling, but how do you measure that effect? Well, you can't. You can have faith, as in believing in God or the tooth fairy. Either you believe or you don't, and trying to convince anyone of your view is not a good idea.

I often use bling—just in case

. Sometimes I don't. Below are two gurnard caught at Port Waikato on blingless traces made with black mono. The bait was salted bonito (with apologies to Chad). That's a single 8/0 hook you see, but they don't all hook so well.

Next one down shows James Benge's bling. I took this shot at Ocean Beach. As I recall, James caught the only gurnard that night

. Even Chad dipped out—no shit

. Did James's bling do the business? Who knows. We can say it didn't scare them off.

I guess if there are lots around and they're competing for food, they would be less fussy about bait presentation.
On the other hand if the local food is plentiful and the fish few, you might need to tempt them with bling in order to get a bite?

Bling for me and a pulley rig to put it out as far as I can, (not all that far I guess). Have caught them on leger rigs too but they dont cast too well.
Some beaches they come in close others distance is very important. I find staggering distances a good trick to find them when fishing two rods. Lumo beads and floats and needlefish skirts do the business.

It seems the use of bling is a favoured addition to many rigs when targeting Gurnard. With that in mind has anyone tried (fluro coloured) bright green or orange trace line?

I think the key is to make the trace look appetising but at the same time looking as natural as possible using coloured trace line would stand out so then look unnatual to a fish. Thats why they only make clear traceline not coloured.

Another think to think about is using a sinker you can scratch along the bottom . A breakout is okay but a Scud , K4 or a Gary's Gurnard work much better. And then just add bling.

Au contraire Aaron, a quick search will reveal trace lines of many colours, red (Shogun), blue (Momoi), green (Maxima Ultragreen and Chameleon), black (Commercial) and even a pink tinged line (Stren). Now please put your tongue away.

I digress, the original question was:
has anyone tried (fluro coloured) bright green or orange trace line?

I used to use clear mono traces with a wine cork for a float on a short pulley rig. Didnt use breakouts just sand grabbers. And the bait was salted bonito. Still caught gurnard though.

I'm quite sure a green needlefish skirt or green float shortens the odds though. And preferably fresh bonito or even a nice anchovy for bait. Any gurnard is a good gurnard as far as I'm concerned. Doesnt matter how you catch em.

The pink fluorocarbon is Stren Coral mist. It becomes all but invisible in the water. Along with many others this is my choice of leader material even in the clearest water. And its tough as!

No crabs but the lice came on strong at dusk. Pilchard baits were coming back as perfect little fish skeletons.
