Pania Shield

Well, well, well. I wonder what Club didn't show

rang in the morning said we'll be there but ?????. Beautiful sea, two small showers then absolutely fine clear weather from 5.30 on.

30 BRAVE fisherpeople from Pania, nine likewise BRAVE and seven HARDY rod clenchers from Gizzy and Wairoa weighed in 5 snapper, the heaviest a good 8.38kg, 14 Gurnard, Heaviest at 1.04kg, 1 Trevalli, Heaps of red cod,

and some smoothies. The Sweepstake was won by Al from Gizzy with a 17.26kg 7 Gill shark.

The wind,

oh the wind. You could have stood in a sandblasters tunnel and felt better. I had to leave the beach it was so bad. 1am mind. Sou' wester my ####. It was directly along the beach and the sand was moving at 40 to 50 knots like a hailstorm. Madness to the extreme. But we did it. I am wondering though what if the conditions are like this during next years Nats. Will the FEARLESS FIELDING crew turn up

I must mention the raffle. It was supposed to be a big tub full of goodies, from wine to fishing gear,

well we ended up with three prizes in total. An awesome effort by everyone. AND a big ups to those thirty from Pania who travelled up and those that came to challenge. Lastly, Gizzy finally wrestled the shield from us. A big CONGRATULATIONS team, an awesome effort and it is good to see it move.

Awesome write up mate.
Any more details on the winning snap, was it caught yesterday, through the night or today? Bait.
What time did it kick off sounds like it was a ball.

Winning Snap was caught at 6.00pm Sat night by a late arrival who put his first bait out just after 5pm. Using a half pilly.

A gritty weekend indeed. At times it was like fishing on a dune in a Yemen sandstorm. Not pleasant when your trying to eat muffins and bacon and egg pie either. If you've gone deaf since saturday you might need to see a doctor. If your constipated be very afraid.

There were some commendable events that occured through it though. The Dance of the Lemons was enacted by a fisherman not far from me after the unexpected reappearence of a hook spitting smoothy. This involves scrabbling around in a metre plus swell trying to grab a runaway shark that just wouldnt give in. Not successful but highly entertaining.

Comfort award goes to Sheik Abdul El Gaveen in his white tent with cookers, lights and seating. The only thing missing was bevy of dancing girls and a few camels. Wish I'd thought of that while I was sitting in the rain on my 5 star log with matching driftwood.

Then there was the plonker who arrived late and got stuck. Thanks for pulling me out Gary. And well done to all those who caught weighable fish particularly in the gurnard free zone around my area. But hey the red cod were there. Little mongrels like sea rats. Still they make make good fishcakes if your desperate or brain damaged by sand strike.

Haha nice Rex. Yeah challenging conditions. If only it was a day earlier eh?. Im still picking sand outa the back of my eye balls. The sea was mint saturday morning and early saturday avo. The anticipation was rife. But as start time arrived a very nasty squally westerly change impeded the smooth clean water and small swell, and turned it to a wind swept cauldron pf murk and mush. The first hour or two was when most of the weighable fin fish were caught, then dark encroached and so did the dreaded red tide of 30 to 35cm REDSODS. Every bait another sod. Fielding did turn up early, they pumped a tone or red sh!ts in the tide and buggered of too cleaner tides. Smoothounds were about as the tide bottomed out with every cray and crab bait getting taken by them, it was a matter of weeding threw the small ones, even if some sawn off punk didn't think they measured up(they did). Any how a good event as always, and great to see a good enthusiastic turnout from Gisborne. Well done guys for winning the log of wood. Looking forward to seeing you again at the Nationals, im sure well bump in to one another before then. Special thanks to Jim and Trish and James for a well run weighin and a record ultrafast tally up result. Cheers

Anywho, fantastic result for Gisborne, thats awsome, well done to those anglers that attended ! I had been fishing the general area for most of the week ( big swells) for pretty much lemons and kahawai and cod after dark. I had one really great fishing day there about 9 days ago, but apart from that it was tough going, so well done those who got a snapper. Great to see a few gurnard turned up also in the settled waters

Yeah and why would he have the pip after weighing in such a fantastic Snapper?. Go figure. The Smoothound he had was all dried up and rotten and short like its owner. Pissed me off he doubted me and our weigh crew. Never mind. I sat it out till 3 am in the vein hope for a big Tahaenui Snapper. Still next time eh.

Yeah there were several good fish caught in the weekend. A nice one from the far end of Whakaki and a couple from the wairoa bar area.

Things should be sweet when the sea settles down

Yes very harsh conditions, a great start to the day clean water and a light offshore we were able to bag a few fish before 1pm and then by 2pm it blew and it blew and then gale force.

Bill, Andy and myself using a makeshift bevy around the quad to try and divert the sand, all had a good laugh and considered our self's and all the other hardy fishos to be the toughest in the country! and of course barking mad...

Haha sorry guys we tried to decide and made the wrong decision. I admit it and take full responsibility so there I have maned up and confessed now bring on the next challenge. To make up for this we will arrange to make a few trips into your waters this next few months and with luck catch up with you for a fish.

Hardy or mad is right. I went down to the school for a couple of hours after we finished there and fished the hole for a while. A bit rugged but not unfishable. No takers but the bait was getting chewed. Fussy bl**dy snapper is all I can say.
