Blue Cod tactics

Was thrilled to catch my first blue cod from the shore this morning, annoyingly it was about a centimeter too small to keep, but still a happy camper.

I've been trying a new spot and was glad to find there are blue cod there. I caught it on a pulley rig, with mussel for bait. I found I had to wind when I got a bite to get them to stick, otherwise they were managing to strip the bait. I always use circle hooks so I have usually left my rods alone until I'm fairly sure there is something on, does this work for blue cod?

Just wondering what are people's tactics for catching blue cod, rigs, bait etc?

Strange This is the first year I have heard of so many Blue cod been caught from the shore, I know they are caught but this year seams to be good for them, look forward to some comments on hoe to catch them, thanks for the info you have already shared Welly.

Gulp softbaits drive them mad. One two hour period I caught on every cast with a few over legal size.
I was using a 5inch Crazy Legs in the New penny colour on a 3/8 oz 3/0 Nitro jig head.

Blue cod are really territorial and will attack anything in their patch even when not feeding. When feeding they are easy as.

im new to surfcasting and in southland... so with the soft baits do you just spin it in like normal spin fishing or what???

Fish them slower than you would a spinner for kahawai and give them a bit of action with a few stops and jiggles. You will find that blue cod will eat Gulp softbait like an ordinary bait. The only problem I have had with them is the habit they have of holding on to the tail till you bring them in and then spitting it after you get a look at them. I have found 4 and 5ins baits in natural colours to work well. Try New Penny and Watermelon colours in the Gulp range.

sweet as i just got a surf caster today and might be out tomorrow so this helps... have you been fishing anywhere around Invercargill way that i might be able to have a go at?

and what rig would be a good beginner rig that i could use for using bait i was thinking the ledger rig cause i herd it was a nice simple rig but i thought i might ask.

also i have 20lb mono on the reel but because im only going for blue cod will i need a shock leader? (is thats what its called) or should i get one?

Shock leader is required when you are casting and adding strain to the line . Try 50lb mono about 10m for a shocker.

i went diving down at colac bay and thought i would take down the surf rod and i got 2 blue cod just big enough to take so guess who has got paua and blue cod for dinner lol
