Attn Kingfish Kings

For those of you who livebait for Kingi's.
How do you hook on your liveys (hook placement)?
Do you hook them in front of the dorsal or behind?

I've been hooking them just behind the dorsal. about 2/3 down the fishes length. My reasoning is that the pull on the trace should tilt the fish nose-down all the time and cause it to swim down the slide..
The problem with this is I'm finding lots of liveys get ripped from the hook without hookups.

I'm assuming whatever is biting them is just grabbing them by the head and not swallowing them whole.

Iv'e always put the hook just in front of the dorsal fin kingis swallow lives head first you just have to make sure you dont go to deep to the flesh and you get plenty of skin for the hook to stay in place so they dont get ripped off easy.

Im no expert, but have caught a few, and I have always put the hook in front of the dorsal, on a slightly forward pointing angle.

A man and fish wouldn't get into trouble if they kept their mouth shut.

I hook livies in front of the dorsal for slidebaiting. I like circle hooks too.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!

I wanted to try out the new hook placement theory today. After 6 hours of utter frustration I gave up and came home

I could see the baitfish and kahawai in the waves, but they just wouldn't bite anything. Burleyed up with skipjack and pillies, fished for 6 hours trying to catch livebaits on baited sabiki's no go....

I need a cast net!

Anyone else been out this weekend?

Where were you fishing? Easy to catch liveys in the esk river. Had a flick last night more of the same ol pan snappas. Damm its too hot indoors!

We were at the Esk mouth again. I did try to catch some liveys up the river a bit but although I could feel the occasional tap on the line I suspect they were just tiny herrings and unable to hook up.

What time did you get the snaps?
We left at about 9.30ish last night.

Hook in front of dorsal fin with point forward.To make bait fish swim down cut off bottom tail fin,to make it swim on the surface or up cut off the top of tail fin.

730 to 930 and a giant conga lmao. There were more caught the following evening. Have been tapped out in the christmas trading at work so i nice feet up and a few cold beers do me. Snapper are being taken at clifton and Te awanga reefs swell, and some good Shoalies at Waikare beach. Good warm nth to ntheast current pushing in at the mo the tuna have arrived and thaere catching them down at Pourere in the boats so alls happening. Good fishing to all!!
