Castle point

Hi all, Has anyone fished around castle point, any advice? Im going down on the 10th of jan and theres a landbased and boat fishing competition on the 11th and 12th which im thinking of entering. Just wondering if anyone else is planning on going down?

Castle point off the rocks used to be good, it has since got pretty average. You can expect, red cod, kahawai, sharks, a few kings, the odd snapper and moki and other bits and pieces.

The beach to the north is not bad, a few gurnard here and there as well as smooth hounds and kahawai.

Best of luck mate, it is a real gem of a place, regardless of how good or bad the fishing

Try a few casts down the beach near the gap at low tide if you dont like the rocks. The ledge under the lighthouse is the scariest place I have ever fished. You need ropes and a cliff gaff there. Chad has the species right but bas he says they can be few at times. I had some cool moki fishing further north at Matakona. They just about eat out of your hands.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Thanks for the replies, it sure does look like an awesome place from the photos I have seen.

I will certainly give the beach in front of the gap a try and rock fishing will depend on sea and weather conditions. Chad, are you talking about the beach where the camping ground is or are you talking further north?

The reef at Castlepoint MUST be respected.Can be dangerious if a swell running, so just be mindfull. The few times I have fished there had some good success.

the front ledge is pretty much gone as the track/path is pretty bad, the beach is pretty good for gurnye's and rig on the right tide(2-3 hours either side of low), kings do show up in the lower part of the reef- catch live baits in the lagoon. Does produce a few odd balls out there- found best to fish close to the reef dont cast to far,watch the water as rough waves, seen snapper,trevs,ky,kings gurnard,even salmon caught off there - very good place for salt water fly fishing chasing ky alot of berly - use a smelt pattern or a large blue/purple deceiver.-If using a lot of fish berly watch for sharks - good fun but dangerous to land
