Casting distance

Hi all
What are your thoughts on the average casting distance?
I went out into the paddock last night and slung a 5oz as hard as i could and got 80 meters a wee bit average for a bloke of 120kg i thought.
What would you call the average casting distance?

Depends on your rod/reel/line-weight etc as well.
Are you asking about competition casting, or actual fishing?
If you can do 80m with a bait on you're doing better than most people you will see at the beach.
I use a pair of 222's with overhead reels and 10kg line. I've not measured my cast but I reckon I'm getting maybe 50-70m on a good cast with a pulley rig and half a pilchard.

Well that makes me feel a bit better my gear is not flash but with a pulley rig and a 5 oz im probably getting 50 meters

I would say the average caster out there casts around 50 meters. Some people dream up big figures when it comes to casting baits out in the drink. But realistically, 50 meters with a bait. Probably around 80 meters dry casting with just a sinker. I would say that would be the averages.

Dave distance comes with using lighter gear bro. Dropping your line weight to 6-8kg, using a longcast spool ect..... It is something that can always be improved though mate.

A couple of years ago I tried out a longcast rig with a soft plastic bait instead of a real bait ( just so I didnt have a few pillys hanging around all day ) at a casting day. 185. something meters but I was using a fairly stiff casting rod.

With my normal fishing set ups @ 120 m is about it unless its a tiny bait.

Hi Big Dave, sometimes putting all your effort in can over power your rod, which could be collapsing your rod and not storing its power. The best thing you can do is come along to a casting day. We can have a look at what you are doing and most times you will gain distance.

What are the specs of the rod
What type of cast style are you using?

Im not sure of the specs are mate its a cheap silstar 3 piece i brought for my young fulla a few years ago he doesnt use it so i do.
I mainly use the over head thump i have tried to ground cast but it just seems to go 100mtrs straight up and 5mtrs forward and dont even get me started on the pendulum i cant get my head around that one.

I rarely need to aim for maximum distance while casting. I normally just flick the baits behind the first wave and wait, so my average distance would be 20-30m.

If I really need to put power into my casts I might get 60m, but honestly never measured it.

That would be a good idea james if I hadent gone fishing last sunday and broken my rod I would take you up on that offer ill have to either get it fixed or front up for a new one I'd be keen to come have a look at your gear set up and casting style though ill give you a buzz maybe next weekend cheers mate
