How close have you had snapper in near the shoreline at night? How close do you think the come?

Used to be only able to cast 30 or 40 meters if that and used to catch snapper at night. East coast beaches tho. Still fishing with people that only cast 40 to 60 meters and on the right nights they are in to them.

They can be seen at times right in the breakers Naki.There has even been a 4kg caught by hand right in the surf at otmarakou during our January bonanza a few years back when I was President

hell the thing was the biggest snapper weighed all day and it wasn't allegable

Cheers for answers so far, A few times lately I have noticed the bait fish right in close and wondered if we are casting right over the real fish.

Have caught snapper straylining of the bricks at night, lobbing baits upto 20m, hooking them around 5-10m out at a guess.

Had them tailing behind me when I was in up to my knees at Tokarau Beach one morning. I have seen them on several occassions tailing in a couple of feet of water at Rarawa and in Parengarenga Harbour. They dont seem so obvious down here but I bet they come right in after their food.
I have certainly caught them hard up against the rocks on many occassions.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

I played around last night wading deep 1 rod and casting short the other. The beach (ramp) was not the best for this due to a bit rock and shyte as the tide dropped.with the out going tide witch it likes I burlied the hell out of it and managed to miss some solid hits and runs with the fish dropping the bait similar to the last time we fished it Panser 2hr before low it started to fire up but not as good as that night. Anyway I finished up a 2am still getting good hits every 10-15min I did manage to get a very fat 45cm snap at about 10:30pm.
It would be worth a look tonight guys but you would need to be late.

picked up 7 snapper tonight and lost 4, biggest 3.4 kg- smallest 1.2 kg- they started biting 1/2 hr before dark,left at 10.30 pm- had to get the kids home- was a good night - spoke to a kon tiki guy in the middle of nowhere he had 27 snapper and was on his 3rd set and about to put another out,

Not the easiest thing to do alone so i'd say there were more than one, as l'm sure scuzzy would have sorted them out if they were by themselves.
7 snaps is a nice haul Mark on ya.

sometimes one has to pick there fights, I was not to concerned as there was a family(with kids), was a shame to see but they were happy. I had my boys with me as well- we had 3 eagle rays playing in the shallows right in front of us in no more than 1 foot of water- very funny as my boys thought they were sharks - wading out out I was being careful doing the Harlem shuffle in the water- also found alot of grot sharks(rig) were around only small upto 3-4 kg,they would only take the cray/pillie baits with out a muppet/skirt. Caught 90% of the fish on a ledger rig with 2/0 hooks and some new beads (and these work). Also dropped down to a 25 lb floro trace.

In regards to kontiki/longline catch limits its down to how many people are 'working' the gear.
So if you have a family of 4 and they are all handling the line/baits/traces/whatever on one kontiki, then they are all entitled to a limit bag of fish..
