With southerlies blowing and temps dropping the inshore migration should be underway soon.

Its a pity we have such crap winter species really. It would be nice to be able to target something worthwhile from May to August.
There's always an outside chance of a rogue big snapper or perhaps a lemon.
We've even caught Gurnard locally in June...
Strange things can happen.

Red Cod may not be the most sort after fish from a surfcasting sport point of view, but if treated properly they can be a very acceptable table fish.

If you are prepared to take on a little experiment then try this: The next time you catch a good sized fish, as shown in the picture, whip the fillets off as soon as possible, preferably after you make the next cast. Place the fillets in a bucket (or polythene bag) containing sea water. The fillets will quickly firm up as if they had been dropped in a marinade. They can now be fried, used in a fish pie, or even smoked.

If you leave them whole and wait until you get home then the meat isn't worth much at all, they remain soft and mushy.

Give it a try, anything is better than going home after scoring a blank for the day.

Therye already at Whakaki i saw them being caught a week ago, several too

. Cant do much about it, looks like autumn southwesterly weather fronts are kicking back into gear. Cant complain too much we actually had a summer this year.

Red Cod fillets are the same price at paknsave as hoki fillets ~ small deviation
@ Hangler - I got told by a veeeery old wellington fisho to chuck em in the fridge prior to filleting

Have done so and they eat up OK.

Will try your trick as well

Wonder if it is the brine that firms em up?

There already popping up in the supermarket. Doesnt seem that long ago they were around in numbers last time. Probably catch one of those before I see a gurnard this year. Time just seems to whizz by.

Rex your new fishing spot is red cod country supreme. They are a sub strain though and have great strength. Some will pull your breakout sinkers and others will bend the rod in the rod stand.
You may not believe this but I had one take line just after hookup. (could have been current).

Naki Fisher, if you are on the beach there is no need to be fussy, leave the skin on, just remove the fillets and plunge them in sea water. They can stay that way for smoking but if destined for the pan skin them later.

Fished Napier this afternoon, the inshore water was quite discoloured with the occasional set of three dumpers. BOS were required with quite a current from right to left, especially as it had the wind behind it, but those sinkers would hold.

Nothing doing until the tide turned and for an hour after the high had a three takes and managed to hook up with one feisty Kahawhai. Good fight but a sod to get through the dumpers and the backwash. He (or she) is joining me for tea tomorrow.
