The prawns finally worked.

Many of you may have read that I have absolutely no luck using prawns for bait.
I've used may packets of the damn things and never been able to tempt a lemon with them.

Well today the prawns did the job

Got this beast at Awatoto this arvo..

I use prawns and crab had more hook up then using cray. I have to hide in the bottom of freezer so wift car'nt find. Them other wise she will eat them. What a wast. If the Lemons about they take them.

Its funny some days they work others they don't. Was the lemon spawning? Ive got a few in May on prawns round Awatoto.

It had eggs, but not fully formed pups. The asian lady visible in the distance came down to see what it was. She seemed quite disturbed that this wasteful Kiwi was throwing away the head/fins etc

Have tried prawns a few times but always had more success catching Rig on crab. i have caught big snapper on whole prawns and generally find they keep the spinys at bay.

Racepics, well done landing such a lovely fish. Can you please tell me, were you having any problems with crabs, and were you using the prawns whole? I was chatting with a guy recently who told me he always cuts the prawns in half. Whilst I can see the sense of half prawns as far as economics are concerned, a whole prawn would present far more naturally. I am somewhat at a loss as I have never used this bait and advice from anyone would be appreciated.

Your mention of the photo taken on your cell phone has encouraged me to reply. Like you I have some very expensive camera gear. For obvious reasons I am loath to take this into a salty environment, and what with handling bait I am not then keen on holding my camera.

I took a trip to Trademe under $1.00 reserve auctions. Here I picked up a tiny Sony Cyber-shot, 10.1 mega pixel point and shoot, this easily fits in my tee shirt breast pocket. I have to say I am really impressed with the pictures, including two memory cards I paid $50.00, a bargain in anyone's language. I have noticed several of these cheap cameras on the $1.00 reserve auctions, and they are ideal for the angler who likes to record a special moment.

This should help. I've used the peeled tails before without luck, yesterday I used whole raw prawns rigged as below.
Crabs were there but not in plague proportions, floated pillies were lasting a good 20min so they were not too rampant.

My old Canon 40D which used to be my main camera has spent more time at beaches than most fishing rods

I just didn't take it because I didn't really expect to need it...

The body is worth nothing by DSLR standards, its the lenses that cost the money.

Good idea buying a cheap 'doesn't matter' camera, less worry about damage etc.

Thanks for that, RP, I like the way you have double hooked the prawn, it looks so natural and a perfect bait. No matter from which direction a fish takes your bait, you have an exposed hook lying in ambush, good thinking.

I will now keep my eyes open for some prawns reduced to clear. These often pop up quite cheaply in Pak and Save as they approach their use by date.

Some people remove the outer shell from the body which I guess releases what little scent they have also.

Tried again this afternoon but this time the crabs are rampant, floated baits gone in minutes

with the added bonus of masses of floating weed on the line.
Hence I am now back home having a drink

RP, I was also on the beach at Marine Parade. The weed was evident but not really a nuisance, on the other hand some beautiful kahawai were running and we had a ball. These were really fat fish and I am about to sit down for a feed, so are two of my neighbours.

At about 2:00pm the wind changed direction, the temperature rose and the weed completely disappeared. Another plus, the crabs that have been present recently, were conspicuous by their absents. I brought home four nice fish and had the most glorious lunging run and bite off (40lb nylon trace) but I believe this was probably the work of a barracouta.

I borrowed one off Panser at the Snapper 1000 last year after he caught a snapper next to meon a prawn. Didnt work for me.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Prawn is one of my favourite baits, have caught a lot of fish using them here in the Naki.
