Plenty of Red Cod and Spinies

Got out for my first fish of the school holidays (i'm a teacher) today and it was pretty much non-stop. Got to the Wairarapa about 10am and spent the next 3 hours reeling in fish.

I forgot to pick up some mussels so used mullet and squid. Picked up 3 good sized Red cod on the mullet, only used the squid for about 10 minutes because it was guaranteed spiny dogfish. Good day though.

Every other time out there i've used mussels almost exclusively as this seems to catch red cod but not spinies. I use mussels cause I'm hoping to fluke something better during winter and figure I'll eventually get onto some blue moki come spring/summer.

I'd be interested to hear how other people are going with particular baits.

Yeah it will be reddies and spineys for a while yet. Try crab bait and hook into some Spotty Sharks great fun to catch nice and powerful and grow to some good sizes in the Rapa. Where in the Rapa did you fish today?

No red cod around here yet ! . If I am targeting them I have found large salted Mac baits on 10/0 hooks. Those smooth hounds are fun and tasty.

At Ocean Beach at the car park (no 4wd). Will branch out at some point but it's been good the last couple of months.

Yes I am going to join, got in contact via email for some of the details just need to give Jim a call to get sorted. I would have liked to have gone to the pairs comp but it's about two weeks after my next baby is going to be born. But yeah definitely looking to join up to WSAC for this season.

Good stuff on joining WSAC this season, if you get stuck in and weigh in some fish you will learn alot and it will increase your catch rates fast. Congrats on the pending arrival of your 2nd baby.. happy wife happy life/she will let you go out fishing.

Hi Wellyfisher, next time head down towards the cliffs to the left of the stream when you reach the beach. There are plenty of big smoothhound, fat reddies and elephant fish there at the moment. Caught 6 spotties last weekend all over the 6kg. Manage to drop my phone in the surf though when chasing a spotty that slipped the hook coming up the beach. !! bugger ! Oh and yes I was fishing friday night till about 11:30pm. Cheers Steve
