Big Snapper

Napier area looking good for a big snapper. The rivers and sea are clearing for the weekend and fishing should be good. Whitebaiting picked up thursday and friday with some good catches in the bigger rivers. With the bait will be kahawai and snapper. Beaches to the south of Napier, teAwanga and Haumoana have produced the goods so far with about a dozen big snapper on rods and a few others on longlines. Best one still Jimmy Beazleys 13.45kg.
Beaches to the north like North Shore Rd, Whirinaki and Gill Rd. could come away now and produce a big one or two over the weekend. Good luck if you are going to give it a go. Dont forget to report back

Good luck for the weekend guys I did my stint yesterday seeing the weather man told me porkies and said it would be raining.

I got one slabby looking kahawai at LeQuesne road last night - lots of weed clogging the lines.
Plenty of people fishing. Quads and kontikis/torpedos all over the place too. Might be better having a shot during the week when its less populated.

Hi guys , I'm new here & have a probably silly question .
Targeting big snapper ,whats the secret? Is it bait size ,location ,type of bait or a seasonal thing?
I think I'm doing OK but my best in surf a little over 8lb.

Seasonality and location are the important factors. Right now is the time in Hawkes Bay but that may vary around the country. I used to catch 20+ lb snaps in the Bay of Islands when I lived there but they were later mid to late November.
Bait is less important as they are bottom grubbing scavengers.

Location. Right place right time, and utilising the best weather and sea conditions for your chosen spot. Right now is as good as it gets, nice humid east conditions. See if i can bag another big Hawkesbay Snap tonight

Big baits catch big fish but so do small ones. Thats the least of your worries.

Very true Gary, since i have joined this message board I have found myself putting things on my traces I thought I would never do such as small pink octy skirts, lumo tube, beads and floats and they seem to do the job pretty good now just to see if i can get that big moocher who hit my line last week on my next trip out after doing a bit of reviewing of my traces and increased size of my hooks and added keeper hooks I think I am ready for him this time (I hope)
