Cast weight ratings

Just wondering if many people go slightly over there cast weight ratings on thier rods both (scored the second one yesterday) of my fin-nors are rated up to 112g (approx 4oz) I do not know if I am reading too much into it (which I was told by a guy from a tackle shop yesterday)as I do occasionally use sinkers heavier than 4oz the 14 footer seems to handle it ok and get some decent distance from it but really am I pushing the limits of the rods and risking it as I do not want to go wrecking them.

Its not normally an issue to go a ounce over the ratings.
Comes down to how hard you cast it more then the actual weight.

Fin-nor as Neil said going an ounce over the rating on the rod should not be a huge problem if you cast with respect. As a retailer and as a caster you see some crazy ratings on rods. Also remember that you are going to add a bait to that sinker. People should think about what is required to get the job done, adding more weight may not give you extra distance but it could get to the bottom faster and grip better, and then there's line diameter ?????

I'm reluctant to go over the rating on my 222 ,seen a guy snap 1 in half by adding too much lead.Expensive mistake .

Rod breakage happens in a few ways.

Genuine manufacturing faults. They do happen and normally will happen very quickly after purchase.Poor qc or a design flaw .

Damage due to car doors sinker hitting it getting dropped etc etc . They are made of a few layers of carbon fibre cloth and resin . Enough of a impact will damage the blank leading to its failure at some stage .

Wear and tear. Most things will breakdown after they have been bent back and forth a few hundred thousand times esp when rods are getting lighter and lighter .Also he joints will wear as well over time.

Overloading . Rods only bend so far before the blank goes from round to oval and the resin/fibres give up. Way too heavy a load or using line way way above the ratings .

Overpowering . Related to the above where you are in the weight range but are simply putting more power then the rod can cope with .

Poor technique. More then a few people break the tip section when they try to pendulum cast and hit the rod way before the sinker is in the right spot to do so.

Thanks for the advice guys much appreciated phill I have started to use the off the ground cast not game enough to even attempt the pendulum cast so I do put a fair amount of force into the rod but not as much as what the pendulum does the 5oz only goes on when fishing the west coast if a 4oz is not holding very well. Widegap that is the exact sort of thing I do not want happening which is one of the key reasons I asked here to put my mind at ease as what someone says to get a sale out of you can sometimes turn out to be the wrong advice. Just like I have seen shop staff conning inexperienced shooters into buying big magnum centerfires for thier first hunting rifle which is a big no no in my books.

Neil you mentioned two of my biggest pet hates sinkers hitting rods, and rods hitting the ground from falling over or being dropped, as it is I get pretty peeved off if my reels so much as even touch the sand (yes I get very anal about how my gear is treated)even during transport and at home my surfcasters are in rod tubes that came with them and are cleaned in warm water with a hand held shower and soap after every fishing trip.

Neil knows what he is talking about. Hes broken most types of rods at on e time or another.

Yup many were totally my fault . Either hitting it too early or just a bit too much grunt lol.

Funny you mention quads Neil I used to have an old kawasaki KLF300 quad it was my work bike used to tie my beach spike onto the front of it with bailing twine and ride the 55Km from Te Maire beach in Dargaville along the beach to the kaipara entrace bloody big tackle box come fish bin bungee tied on the back spare fuel on the front and fishing rod slung over my shoulder with bailing twine used to catch a few nice kahawai which I used to smoke in the old oven I found in a paddock which I rescued I can not say I ever had the quad related rod breakage but damn near did run over a seal after the missus said watch out for the log ahead so I closely dodged it only to see a head pop up lol the only rod I have ever broken was a jarvis walker 12 foot surf rod casting a 3oz ball sinker at bethells beach.
