Will be down your way 1st week of February 4 days at Marokopa and 5 days at Mokau.I would like to have a day fishing at Epiha Road can you give some advise as to what is the most likely bait/rig that you think I may have the most chance of catching some fish with.Cheers Charlie.

Epiha is a good low tide spot. Usually use a running rig or a clipped down pulley rig. My personal favourite bait is prawn or anchovy. As you head down the stairs walk slightly to the left and you will see a nice gap in the reef that has clean ground out front. Born to fish. Forced to work.

Although I haven't fished there recently myself I was talking with a regular from Te Kuiti a few days ago who said that snapper are being caught at Willisons Bay at Marokopa. Walk out to the river mouth hang a left walk about 500metres to the next bay. There is a large rock extending out to sea, two smaller rocks visible at low tide about 200 metres out. Cast out toward the 2 smaller rocks from the beach at low.

OK First time the laptops been open in weeks. Here is a little info I have saved from other posts on here:
If you drive past the public toilets to the end of the road at Marokopa village there's a beach access and if you walk onto the beach there you'll see the mouth. 500m(?) an easy walk even for us. Once you get to the mouth fish just around the point to the left, around the corner between the rocks... you'll see exactly where, as there's a nice sandy bit. The sandbar is easily visible at low tide. Incoming tide is best although the ky's are there every 6 hours high or low. Wade out onto the sandbar til the incoming chases you off. Half anchovy or 1/3 pilly for bait or even better, a pilly fillet will do what's required. Failing that, skippy. Small baits are the trick. Breakout sinkers are almost mandatory there, although if the wind and water are the right way you may get away without them. Spinning a Hex Wobbler/Chrome Slice just inside the river mouth can be very productive when the fish have gone off the baits.Lots of rocks tho. Good treasure to be found after the weekends at low tide in there. Not gold, but plenty of silver and lead. Hardy if time is on your side and you dont mind taking the scenic route go over the hill from Marakopa to keritiheri (about 6kms from memory there is a great spot called half tide track about 4kms past keritiheri river mouth although may be bit much of a walk about a k or so up hill then down cliff (steep hill) on other side very good track though , or about 20 kms past there is a beautiful little beach called waikawau access to the beach is through a tunnel through the cliff about 50 meters long on the other side is a beautiful bay with some rocks to the left at low to 3/4 tide you can easy walk on rocks and cast back into the bay or just fish from the beach kahawai snapper trevs and gurnard are prevalent and then its about 33kms from here to awakino At low tide at the Mokau bar you can usually get right ono the point to fish deeper water. It can be a bit of a walk from where you park ex 500M..... But there will be snapper and trevally there if you strike the right conditions.
I would use a longcast rig, ledger is fine for kahawai, but you will need distance for quality species Just back from our yearly excursion to the mighty Mokau, heaps of big Ky didn't take the scales but at a guess they would av.2.5 to 3Kgs.Fish to the right of the river mouth there is a big gutter there. fish right in front of seaveiw motel big hole there be aware of odd scatered rocks as you have to wade to cast to the hole
Let us know closer to the time when you are going to be around.

Hi Naki-Fisher I will be at Mokau on the 5th-10th.We are one week later than last year.Last year we fished the hole/gutter to the right of the river caught KY and Snapper didn't have to cast to far.Fished the incoming tide.We bring the covered trailer with all the camping stuff on and most importantly the surf rods and associated tackle. We stay at the White-Bait Inn found it to be not to flash but the cheapest place around that area.
