My first Moki

My first ever Moki, cought off the walkway in New Plymouth, just over 6 pounds. First decent fish of the year.

Born to fish. Forced to work.

Awesome mate well done it was only a week or so back a mate spared one so I thought they must be around. First moki ive heard of in the naki. Caught on parwn?

That is a very very fat looking moki. Very deep in the body and from the way it is lying on the deck it looks very thick thru the body. They are generally fattest in April/May just before they disappear to spawn. This one might have resembled a football by May if hadnt been caught. I bet when you gutted it you noticed how greasy your hands became.

To me they have a disgusting flavour and I give them away or put them back in the drink. I have often heard that oven baking them is the way to go.

Perhaps try a fillet liberally coated in peri-peri chip sprinkle and some the South African spice rub called Zulu Fire added plus some garlic tomato paste and a lemon wedge - wrapped in aluminium foil and baked for 25 mins in a moderate oven. Throw the cooked fillet away and spoon whats left over some lightly buttered fresh brown bread - enjoy!

We had some last night and i realy wasnt too impressed. Rig is way better

The Juvenille fish in the legal to 50cm size are the best eating. Trim all the dark meat from the fillet. I usually bleed them straight away. They are rather a greasy fat soaked fillet but are quite tasty. As usual if you chill the fish straight away it will taste better. Id eat moki over Rig, but thats just my taste BUDS
