The Pania website will have live updates throughout the day with the current heaviest fish weights etc.

You will be able to view this on your smartphone and decide if your fish is in the hunt for a prize or should be released

hi, could any one please verify the beach limits for the competition. Not sure, are we allowed as far up as the town reef and at what point does Awatoto beach finish.

The boundary stretches from roughly where the the art deco fountain with the bronze nude female on top is sited and stretches past the shingle works at Awatoto to the start of the first bridge Town reef IS NOT within the boundary.HQ opposite Ellison St near the car park with public toilets

I'm marshaling at the northern most boundary which is the art deco fountain with the bronze nude female on top.

There are Kahawai all the way along that stretch. A lot were caught around the drain last year from memory. The big one could be anywhere.

Another well run event. I am constantly amazed at how much stuff the club gives to kids at this comp. No one goes away empty handed. Both hands full of goodies.Well done to JP and the other hard working crew.

23 fish in total does not sound like a lot. May I ask how many anglers fished in this competition? The venue of Marine Parade usually fishes very well for kahawhai, therefore I am surprised the catch rate wasn't bigger. Was there any particular reason for the poor catch: weed, crabs, rough or dirty water?

Conditions were clean and flat - it was just a poor fishing day it seems.
Kahawai are pelagic fish. They roam all over the place, sometimes there are plenty there, sometimes none.
Some may suggest 'time of day' (8am-2,30pm) as an issue, but I would note that even in the last 10 Pania Twilight competitions there have only been a handful of fish caught total, from 20 or so rods fishing 6-9pm over ten evenings.

There were 112 caught last year - obviously a great day for fishing, Not quite as many rods this year, but considerably less fish.
Thats the way it goes

Also it was 23 fish weighed in (fish had to be 30cm to be eligible ) I think there may have been some small ones released.

Not sure of the actual figure as the sold/unsold tickets have not been counted yet. I would guess at around 150.

Thank you RP, I appreciate your answer. One fish to every five rods may seem quite poor, but I have known competitions on the Napier beaches when the returns have been far worse, with prizes given out for herrings.

The figure given to me regards takings suggests around 200 fishermen and women took part which was probably ok given there were a number of other competitions and events held this weekend as well.

I think most fish were caught in the morning at around high tide and tapered off from there, which seems fairly typical. I know the winner caught his fish in the early part of the morning and had quite a tense wait I believe.

From the evidence I've seen at club weigh ins and twilights the kahawai numbers in the bay seem to have been down a little this year. There seem to be a lot of small ones around this year as well. I think the catch reflected that.

Awesome comp regardless of the numbers ! I for one have fished a couple of times a week/ every week this season and the numbers of fish have been very poor.One settles for lemons and just the basic enjoyment of being on the beach.The winning fish was caught on his first cast/change of bait ! Congrats to the Pania club for putting on another great day and to the thresher shark that gave me another tick off my list.
