Quads on Beaches

Regards your question Mr Hangler

I recieved a communication from John Bruce of the Bay View Police and Revenue Collection regards this very matter.

He (John Bruce) states in his Police Watch Column that Mr Plod is taking a more serious approach to the use of Quad bikes on beaches, due to the recent publicity around deaths/accidents on said vehicles.(Even though most accidents are on farms)

Mr Plod points out that to "ride a quad bike or motorcycle in a public place or any public road (such as a beach or campiing ground) you must have a drivers licence.

Also according to Mr Quad Plod you must also ensure that...
Your quad is registered
Your quad should be of WOF standard.
That you are wearing an approved helmet.

Failure to provide any of these will result in an infringement notice as the Government has to present a healthy surplus prior to the election.

So there you have it, a beach is apparently a road.

By definition, in NZ a beach is classed as a public road. Road rules have always applied to the beach. However, quad bike riders do take care on the beach and it is not enforced as there a very few accidents.

Kiwichris, a member of this site experienced a very nasty accident on a quad or trike this past year, he was seriously hurt.

This is a case that came before the courts today.

That's why it is classed as a road. And all road rules apply.

most quads would not pass a w.o.f but are quite safe its the people riding them that make them dangerous

Saw one quaddie with his hemet on at Haumoana. Then another complete idiot on a three wheeler blasted past showing no concern for anyone without one. It was obvious who needed one the most.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

At TeAwanga on Saturday they were blasting up the main road on quads and trikes, no helmets. Cops would have had a field day.

Passed two on the main road to whakaki friday evening, no helmets and made no effort to be on the side of the road...
