Red cod hold off

Red cod seem to have decided to hold off entering Hawkes Bay surfcasters space so far this year. They wont be far off though and will probably surf in on the next big southerly front that comes through.
Cod and couttas are the expected on most beaches in the next few weeks, There will still be a few big snapper wandering around but they are probably packing their bags now. Kahawai will be our mainstay of catches once again. What happened to summer?

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Yep, same here in wellington. I have not seen such low numbers for years. I am not convinced we will see many this winter.

I was catching a few a couple of months ago thought it was the end of it but not since, haven't seen a spikey yet either then haven't seen to many snapper either.

Yeah its transition time I guess. I saw one pop up on Facebook this morning so there on there way. Oh well theres always a chance of a big winter snapper around both our respective areas. Never say never or you'd have to give up fishing and play golf

I got 6 of the bastards last night with 2 eels
Not a bad night really.
Bite time 7:30 - 9:30pm. 9:30 - 12:30am slowed right down but it was a nice night to be out there.

Not many reports lately guys any of you been out?

Nothing wrong with them if you know how to deal with the slimy little buggers. There has been a few coming in on the long lines down this way.

Shit thats funny. Yep Logan thats what you get for under estimating our slimy red friends. I used to catch them in their 100s when I was a kid and yes we ate them. Now I turn them into fishcakes if I'm short of other fish. But as gary so rightly points out its not over yet. (I hope)

My freezer is filling up with them lol but can't bring myself to filleting one.
