Big Snapper

On Monday my Lil brother went out to clifton and the jammy bugger managed to hook himself into a fish of a lifetime.

It weighed in at 19'8" so just short of the magic 20' mark but he was still stoked as, he was still buzzing when I spoke to him today. Unsure of measurement at this stage but when i know ill post them.

As for bait if i know him as well as i do it was probably squid with half a pilly inside.

Now is theoretically time for the HB big Snapper to make an appearance.
That photo gives me a reassurance after a few days of no bites at all.
Any of the Napier beaches could throw up a monster for the next month or so.
Get out there with the big baits and heavy traces

Oh, and well done that man!!!!

Havent spoken to him to ask but looking at the terrian and the fact he probably had to walk id say it wouldnt be to far from the camp itself

That spot is quite a way down the beach, especially if you are carrying a fair amount of gear. I would put it close to the gully.

The beach nearer the camp is a tackle graveyard, many hidden rocks covered in huge kelp fronds can make surfcasting a trial. All this is clearly visible on low tide and encourages the angler to walk a little or a lot further.

Phill would reccomend fishing the graveyard.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

It was caught on a large bit of freshly caught Khawhai.

Took him about 15 min to bring in, at first he thought it was a ray as it went straight to the bottom and wouldn't move.

They also caught a couple of undersized snapper.

As I thought. That is well past the tackle graveyard I mentioned in a early post. I too had an undersized snapper on my last visit but there is a possibility they may soon depart with the very cold southerly heading our way. The water temperature is bound to drop quite smartly.

are you able to drive these in a 4x4 at low tide . how much past the Clifton camp ground car park .

You could have trouble with a vehicle on the beach. Very large tractors pulling large trailers loaded with tourists are a daily happening. It is also a popular walking track to the cape. I have never seen a vehicle on the beach other than quad bikes and trikes.

This is purely a personal thought. If there were complaints about vehicles on that beach it could get the angler access through the camp stopped. The beach is a very unusual configuration, it can vary with any strong wind change and very high tides. The entire seafront at Clifton is very unstable and I believe locals who are fighting hard to get the area stabilized would frown if 4x4's were to make regular appearances.

That is a personal point of view ... I walk in so I know the area quite well. I must also add the shingle is very loose, it would be quite easy to get bogged down. Even the access road through the camp is restricted at present, the problems in this area are truly enormous.

just c question . how do u c a 4x4 to be any different to a tractor or a bike driving up and down the beach ? if u follow tracks that are all ready there I wouldn't think you would add to the erosion. or upset any one if u were parked well out of the way of other beach uses

There was a pic on here of a 4x4 stuck at Clifton not that long ago with water lapping around it. Plenty of CHB beaches with 4x4 access, sadly very few with regular snapper.

So much for the lack of fish in the bay catching that snapper made up for the last 4 months of catching zip not that i'm complaining fishing is fishing but bringing that beast on shore was like being a little kid on Christmas morning exciting stuff

hbfisher: I believe to answer your question you would need to take a trip to Clifton and see what is left of the road, and the debris on the beach.

There are already signs up saying no traffic except camp users, it must be remembered this is a private road.

The tractors are a tourist operation and there may be some arrangement with the owners of Clifton reserve, I just don't know. A tractor is far more stable on the beach than a 4x4, and as already mentioned, with the state of the road and the access, the less vehicles on this beach the better.

To gain access by staying on the beach may not be an option as it involves crossing a boat ramp. Here winch cables are run out down the beach to retrieve boats, I can't see vehicles being very welcome either.

Why not simply walk like I do. I am seventy-two and I can make it in with all my gear and camera equipment with no problems.

Good call hangler plus its a nice walk around there not so enjoyable carrying an extra 19.8 lb snapper back with me
