Kahawai, kingfish, trevally, red cod, weighed in. Best catches Mahia area. The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

HBfisher, had a four hour session this morning on a local beach. The catch consisted of a small dog fish, a small eel and a 3kg (approx) black backed gull. The latter gave a spirited fight, which it was quite prepared to continue once landed.
The bird was eventually subdued with a large towel thrown over it's head and a tight grip around the neck. I cut the line at the leader knot and the ungrateful sod was successfully released without so much as a word of thanks.
From there things went from bad to worse: my wife, who was supposed to be filming the session, never captured a single frame of my fight with the gull; she was too busy laughing.
Lovely morning, several takes but they were single bites that never returned. Very enjoyable morning, the temperature was five degrees when we hit the beach and twenty-two when we left a little after mid day.
We never blanked and that is what fishing is all about.

What a shocker! Got to Mohaka bridge 4.30 am. !@#$% it, closed for repairs. Next stop Waihua. Looked good, 1 small ky then 2 snags/bust offs. Left there minus leaders and terminal gear. Whakaki next, dead quiet after high tide,1 keeper ky in the bin however. Afernoon at Blacks, spotted a good hole Nuhaka side of first car park. Started walking to my possie for the evening but was passed by 2 quads who laid claim to my Eldorado. &^%$*&. Fished back by the car park, beautiful evening but only small ky and one good rod bender but no hook up. Stayed the night with my sister in Nuhaka, and sparrows fart off I went to snapper rock. Good swell running so stayed well back from the edge. Tiny trev and another bust off. Next stop was the very eastern end of Blacks. Lovely spot and have caught a few snapper there in the past. Have not lost any gear there in the past but when your numbers up it's up. 2 more snags/bust offs. One costly ky for the weekend, but cant wait for next trip away. It will be awesome. Just out of curiosity did anyone fish Mohaka? Cheers to all clubbies, I have loved meeting you all and may your rods bend seaward.

You should have weighed your kahawai Fringsy, you would have had one more than me. I fished Ocean Beach and Gill Rd. The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

The information posted by Rex does tend to promote the question, if snapper and gurnard are available a thousand metres out, why aren't they coming into shore?
You can't blame commercials for taking them if they are there to be caught, and being taken, on Kontikis.

3 snapper in two sets and 5 gurnard on another kon tiki down the beach. Hardly a bonanza. A few years ago that was common on rods in close. Seems to be a lot less out there than there used to be. To many nets and not enough fish. There are no other compelling reasons for fish not to be available in greater numbers despite the rubbish from commercial fishermen about pollution and what ever other excuse they try to produce to cover there greed.

Rex, a commercial is given a quota that most stick to ... how is that greed?
It still doesn't alter the fact that fish are just a short distance offshore but they are not coming into the beaches. There must be a reason for this and it requires a little more thought than simply blaming everything on commercials. There have been people commercial fishing since Adam was a lad, they are not something new. There are commercials working from Tauranga and Gisborne but I don't hear local anglers putting up the hue and cry of those in this area.
Since I originally moved to Hawke's Bay and that is nearly forty-five years ago, snapper have never been a fish that were landed regularly in this part of the Bay. I have said this before but it's always ignored, simply look back on the Pania committee minute books, all catches in competions are recorded - I know this for a fact because I wrote the minutes and was the originator of sending out the club's newsletter. If members wanted to catch snapper they went to Mohaka ... nothing has changed. The club had a batch there right on the beach, it also had a Gnat for easy access.
We have five rivers that run into this part of the Bay all run through flatland that has in recent years been changed to dairy. It is recognized that dairy runoff is a strong contributory factor in pollution. It may not be the only reason but it sure could be one of a few. Add to this the way the harbour has been altered and this in turn has changed all the beaches north of the harbour. Has this upset fish feeding patterns, especially as snapper eat shellfish. There has been a lot written about those beaches in recent weeks. they used to be top swimming beaches and a child's playground. Now they are rubbish, requiring constant attention from heavy machinery, this could also be affecting bottom feeding fish coming close to shore.
Fishing has changed out of sight in those years. In three years of recording competition results, red cod were never seen or tope and spiney backs were a rarity. Why are they quite happy to come ashore now whilst gurnard and snapper aren't? There are two sides to this problem and it needs looking at the overall picture. Commercials haven't driven these fish in close, they come here because the feed suits them ... why? Is this simply ecology, everything changes over time.
Answer that question and you may have solved the riddle that is a burr under your saddle.
This is how I view fishing from the beach here in Hawke's Bay. I can't help but wonder which one of the two of us gains the most enjoyment from our chosen sport? This is the video record of Monday morning 11th of May, just two days ago.

Cant be bothered replying Jerry. Most of your points are unsubstantiated, illogical and sadly inaccurate. Im happy to have joined the very large no of people in Hawkes Bay who supported the formation of Legasea for the same reasons I have stated. But your entitled to you opinion, however out of step it is with the rest of the recreational fishing community.
