Just like to hear everyone's thoughts in strong wind, I find that I can never tell if I've got a bite as the rod is all over the place expeshly at night any tips or tricks fishing in strong wind?
Although punishing I really like fishing in strong winds, always seem to do well in strong off shore winds.
I use soft tipped rods, strong wired bos sinkers and 6kg line that stretches and doesn't pull the sinker wires. When you've cast out wind tight to form a nice bend in the rod tips. When theres a strong crosswind walking up the beach into the wind from your holder then casting can help hold your sinker in place. The wind can blow all it likes if you can maintain the curve in the rod and tight line. When fishing circle hooks your rod will straighten up indicating a take. Or you'll get that good bender from a strong take. Reflective tape works well for night fishing in strong winds too. Tip lights alone move nonstop but if you've got reflective tape down the top third of the rod you can see the curve of your rod with light on it. Hope some of this can help.Fishing in windy Welly.
If the wind is offshore put your rod stand in on an angle leaning seaward. If your rod is standing straight up it catches more wind than if its pointing towards the sea. You can lean it a fair way over (45 degrees or so) if you have strong enough ground supporting your rod stand. If using a bait runner cast out running rig with sand sinker either lay rod on the sand upside down or set rod spike very low angle and listen for the bait runner to scream. Can also help in massive surf. If not bait runner set drag light and wait.
I love strong offshores, particularly for gurnard. Porangahau is one place where the offshore brings the fish in and we wait for it, particularly in the spring time. Tight lines with rods bent over works well. Circle hooks will mean more hookups before you get to the rod.
The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.
