In Sept 2014 i spooled up three diffrent nylons on three surf rods to trial as some nylons were not standing up to harsh conditions on the West coast of the South Island. The fish species we target are rig. (No1) Sufix Siege 12kg .0.40 A beautiful line to cast but this nylon produced to many snap offs at the knot. a leader was used.Even with changes of knot did not improve. (2) Sufix Duraflex 15.5kg 0.40 using a leader performed well with only the odd break due to being snagged but a nice nylon to use with leader. (No3) Black Magic Premier supple 15kg .45 was used over the 12 months without a leader. This nylon has stood up to some very hard fishing on rig with no snap offs except for an odd snag. For twelve months of fishing using black magic that rod would have taken 20 to thirty large rig and the line is still on the spool but will be changed now. Phil at Tackle tactics supplied me with the three. The nylon that will be on all three rods will be the black magic. I would have no hesitation to reccomend the black magic as an all round general surf line.I know some of your readers have their own likes and dislikes but i believe it comes down to a product that is going to stand up to those rigours of producing the fish, as losing fish is not what we want.(We keep what we require and return others to the sea.)

Nice message, David, it's good to read a report giving personal opinions on the use of a product. That is the sort of report that should go down well with newcomers to the sport. Like you I always try to share success regardless of whatever way it comes.

What type of reel were you using - free or fixed spool? I have been using the Siege on 2 Penn Squall SQL15's and found the same as you, a lot of snap off's at the main line/leader knot. I have just respooled with Sakuma Brite Crystal and am hoping for better things.

Thanks for your comments a fixed spool bait runner as all my reels are bait runners. Why i will stay with the black magic 0.40 15kg is that it is standing up to our type of fishing here where we are constally using 6oz breakaway sinkers. The other thing that i would mention is that i fish through the winter when ever we can as our spring weather can be crap. Why i buy most of my fishing gear from Phil is that sometimes i cannot get the product here and if i order today through tackle tactics its here within two days. I think what you have to remember is that there are a lot of good nylons & braids out there for our use but it is what you are happy with to use in your area.

David I read your post with interest, as I have a compulsion to try out any new line on the market.
I too have tried Sufix Siege line. I my case I never really got beyond tying on my leader material (20 lb Siege to my usual 30 leader material). I generally use a shock knot. Anyway I wrapped both lines in tea towels in the privacy of my kitchen and took up the strain to pull the knot up tight. To my amazement I saw the knot very slowly undoing as the tag end of the Siege disappeared and the knot flew apart. If I was sitting on a beach and rerigging I would have just pulled the knot up tight with my bare hands and not have realised I had a suspect knot - until I got snagged. I then tried a regular blood knot with the same result - under big tension the knot slowly pulled apart. This might have been happening to you (and others) the knot letting go, or the line cutting thru itself as it slipped perhaps?
I had previously not tried Black Magic Premier Supple line figuring that it was average line bought in bulk with a Black Magic logo slapped on it. However, about a year ago, in a moment of weakness I made an impulse buy in Phil's fishing emporium in Levin - BM Supple 12 kg and gave it a go. It knotted well, it cast well, was flexible, and was durable (didn't harden with use and stayed smooth) and had good strength. Personally I really like the visibility of coloured line which this doesn't have.
