First session, New season.

My three hour session on Saturday was captured by my wife on video. It was necessary to split the footage into two parts and today I have posted part one. Whilst I am very aware Kiwi anglers have little interest in this kind of fishing, the movies are made predominately for the UK market, where anglers can't believe what they are watching: double figure fish anytime I want one.The specie matters not one jot, it's the sport that counts, as it should be.

My wife was paid the nicest of compliments from a UK angler, who said her fishing videos are the best to come out of the southern hemisphere. We are a team, and this person asked us to make more.

In this clip you will see the unusual fish I landed, I am still not sure if the identification is right, I would appreciate the correct name if someone knows it. Part two will be loaded on line probably at the end of the week.

Thank you for saying so. I will hopefully get the second part on line by the end of the week, not feeling up to par at present.

The rays can certainly soak up a lot of time and effort. Just a tip for handling the smaller ones. Flip them onto their backs if you can, and the tail becomes useless. They can only 'flick' the tail upwards, so when its on its back you can safely remove your hooks without having to worry about the barb.

I usually do that RP, but in the case of the stingray the hooks were so far down it would have been easier to locate them from the other end (so to speak), but I have no desire to become a proctologist.

The eagle ray was hooked in the mouth (both hooks) this made it easy to release and yes it was flipped upside down.

It occurs to me whilst for personal safety it is wise to upend them, I wonder if this disorientates them for release? This makes sense as no fish naturally swims upside down.

Similar applies to sharks - turn them upside down and they settle quite a lot.
Flip them right way up and they're instantly back to normal.
Once I've extracted the hooks from a ray, I'll flip it right way up and use a gaff or a lump of driftwood to coax it back into the water.
The problem occurs with the really big ones. Flipping a 50kg+ ray is no easy feat, especially as having fought it for an hour or so, one's arms are no longer responding to requests

Sometimes just cutting the trace has to suffice..

RP, I didn't realise there was another member of this site who enjoys battling a large ray, I make no bones I love it and it's what fishing is all about.

I might add it's not only the arms that refuse to cooperate, with the rod's butt between my legs the wedding tackle can come in for a hammering.

I agree if you can see the hooks in the throat cutting the trace is a sound option but when they are right down in the gut then I would rather put the fish out of harm's way. The flesh is never wasted, only yesterday I had some of the stingray cooked with a marinade of teriyaki sauce, I have to say it was simply delicious.

Perhaps along with my wife we should do a fish cooking video. The first project would be red cod ... naturally.

Hi Hangler. I noticed the wedding tackle was getting a bit of a hammering. Maybe you need one of those belt things, you put the rod butt in. Maybe Mrs Hangler will get you one for xmas, then the family jewel's won't suffer any damage.

You could be right, Hardy, even with her limited English she is always suggesting the rod needs a rest.

I am waiting to take delivery of two new rods, these are lighter, thinner at the tip and adjustable at the butt. For a man of my age with a prostate problem, I guess it's about all I can expect and hope for.

I sat down and explained in very fine detail what I investing our money in. Fortunately my wife has very little understanding of English and I can't speak Chinese so as yet I am still in one piece.

I have a cunning plan, when the new rods arrive I have a near new Diawa 14 foot rod I will to give to my son-in-law. Juan (my wife) can hand it to him as a Christmas present. That action will make her an accomplice to the deceit, thereby losing any hint of an argument regarding what I have done.

Tread warily when mentioning humour, I fear that is thin on the ground at present.

The videos this thread was supposed to be about have already had in excess of 150 views on line. UK anglers can't believe just how lucky we are to have such fish always at the ready.
