I am new to Surf casting and have been practicing my casting at a local sports ground.There are distinct mow lines in the grass and I have been attempting to cast along one of these lines but every cast I attempt goes anywhere from 35 to 60 yards to the right of straight ahead.I am using a fixed spool reel and thought perhaps I am releasing the line too soon. Experimenting with foot position only seems to effect the cast distance. I realize that I'm probably committing any number or combination of errors. I live in Marlborough, can anyone please advise where should I look for some casting tuition. Thanks Colin

Good on you Colin for recognising your problem and asking fot help. The fact that you sinker is landing right could be due to overloading the rod. Dont try so hard. Let the rod do the work. Body position will also effect you delivery. Try standing like you were about to play a tennis shot. Slightly side on. End the cast with the rod pointing skyward in the direction you want the sinker to go. Theres about 100 other things to consider too. Try searching you tube forhelp with the "off the ground cast". Good luck. It possible and just takes time. Took me two years to get the OTG cast sorted.The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Look for John Holden on line I think you may find it quite useful for surfcasting. I have his book called The Beach Fisherman's Compendium get a copy if you can.

Thanks Guys I will follow your advise. Charlie I have a copy of that book on the way via Amazon. I have had six or so practice sessions at a local park and have been using a range finder to measure distance achieved. Most casts [5oz sinker only] are between 100 and 117 yards and all out to the right at varying angles. My plan is to go back to the beginning, try John Holdens exercises with a broom handle and see where that takes me Thanks again Colin

One thing I did when I was learning to cast was pick an object in the distance and aim for it which helped me alot in stopping my line from going where I didn't want it to go and have been doing the same with my son as he is also in the process of learning to cast.

Colin you will have to try and forget about what you have been doing(harder than you think)and start from the beginning from laying the line out straight behind you then gradually work your way through it a little at a time. I use to do the overhead thump like a lot of people do got about 60-80 yards, by just laying the line out straight behind you like he suggested my distance went up to about 120-130 yards just after about 12 casts. I would say without a doubt that this book would be the best surfcasting book you will ever buy.

In a way Charlie is right. Forget everything you thought you knew and start again. While John Holden is but one of many casting instructors other guys like Ron Arra in the states and other UK guys are equally worth listening too. Follow their instructions even when they seem wrong and you will improve. IT takes time. The first improvements are the biggest ( and most satisfying) after that its metre by metre.
