Kingies in the Surf

This season I want to specifically target Kingfish in the surf off the beach and would appreciate advice on the best setup to use. Mainline weight, terminal tackle, baiting etc. I appreciate that live-baiting is probably the most successful but how good is standard bait and which is best? Advice on everything would be appreciated.

Slide baiting works the best I've found, 15kg mainline with a sinker on the bottom, cast it out, catch a livey, use a coastlock swivel and slide your livebait down the mainline. Sit back and wait.

You can tune up Andy's suggestion by using two live baits. The first one you slide is on a non return slider clip (tackle Tactics)it will fish its way right down to the sinker. It will not be able to swim back towards the rod. The second is on a trace with a float on it. This bait will not be able to travel down he line due to the float so will fish the kingiest area which is just behind the first wave.

Thanks AndyG and GaryK good advice. I intend to spend more time on the beach this year and want to change my approach to how I target specific species. I even intend to give Flounder fishing a go. Cheers guys.

If you run a livebait on the surface, make sure its too big for a gull to have a go at...

And sometimes fishing two live baits you can get a bonus.... Yesterday at Whakaki on the one cast I caught a nice kingfish (around 7kg) on the nonreturn slider and a 2kg Kahawai on the trace with the float on.
