Long casting when fishing

I cant believe that some (one at least) member of this board believes that learning to cast distance has nothing to do with fishing and will not increase your catch. There are many scenarios in my fishing life when being able to blast a cast well out has made a difference to my catch. Lets look at one night one the beach at Thornton BOP. My wife and I were fishing the Nationals. Fish were scarce during the day but showing up after dark. WE fished side by side with one rod each. Sue caught a kahawai early then nothing. Then I started getting snapper most casts, she couldnt get a bite. WE changed places and it didnt help, it was the distance from shore that was important. I landed 14 snapper that session and she had none. (You cannot cast for other fishers in the Nationals).
Another instance was under the lighthouse at Cape Karikari there were schools of kahawai and skipjack tuna working the current lines. Being able to cast long distance allowed me and my mates to reach the skippies and catch these prized fish from shore on lures. A short caster wouldn't have caught one, only kahawai.
Another good example of the benefit of longer casting is when you are in a contest. To get twenty metres past your neighbours bait puts you in unfished waters. Now thats an advantage.
The big surf beaches like Ocean Beach in HB, 90 Mile in the north and others where the waves roll in from afar are the realm of the longer caster.
I agree that if you fish from wharves or off steep sloping deep water beaches or even around inshore reefs then you wont need a long cast but the day you look futher afield or try to reach a passing school with a spinner you may be pleased you learned to get a bit of extra distance.

I can agree with that Gary when I could only cast as far as the middle of the breakers I was getting bugger all bites unless I wanted to wade up to my chest to cast my line out to get over the back of the waves, now that I am starting to practise different casting techniques like the off the ground cast when not using pulley rigs and the one you call the water cast when I am using a pulley rig as I always find the bait comes unclipped on the pulley rig when attempting the off the ground cast.

You need to be super smooth off the ground with a pulley rig but not impossible.

If you use a Splash Down clip instead of a impact shield or similar the hook is trapped until impact.

There's a reason why certain species seem to be easier caught in a westerly in HB.

After a recent experience at the 90 mile...it was heart breaking to see people sitting on great water yet were unable to get a cast to the "prime" water. Only able to reach it at the low tide missing the vital early morning bite times. Does distance matter....HELL YES!!

Take less, leave more...tomorrow is another day

If distance is not a benefit, how is it that so many serious fisho's do everything they can when setting up their rods, reels and tackle to gain every metre they can. Why do so many wade out to cast, they do so to get more distance. If distance wasn't important we would all cast from a position on the beach where we wouldn't get our feet wet. It's a no-brainer, every metre helps. However we also know that accuracy is important if you wish to be able to put your bait in the right place such as a whole or gutter or as you said in your piece Gary, in the middle of a school of skippies.

Thanks everyone. It was a silly argument for Hangler to try and get going anyway. I am sure his fishing is not affected bt being a short caster but I would rather have a long cast up my sleeve when I need it, thanks.
