It was a cold morning and most of us rattled as we walked. A cold wind, sunshine, hail, rain, but a flat sea and a westerly that fired your bait well out into the surf. Awatoto was the chosen beach and 9 intrepid fishos, men and woman braved the elements to battle the cold and a mildly brown sea. The fish lay in wait for our arrival, thinking they could outsmart us. They couldn't this time with a good number of red cod weighed and one lone couta. Chris Morris was the pot champ with a 1.88kg beast. Pairs winners of the BM to be advised. Catching fish is a rare event off a beach these days, particularly summer species, but today was one out of a very sparse box. Noticeably absent though, Kahawai. Noticeably present about 700 metres out the typical HB trawler

He was certainly mounting a challenge to become an ace cod crusher. But it was funny to see everyone pack up about 30 minutes early as their bins started to swell and their fears about being outed as the New Red Cod King began to mount. Who would have thought people would be worried about catching to many fish .
