My 13 year old grandson want to start fishing and I'm wondering how to teach him basic surf casting. He' s a tall lad and quite robust, big hands and big feet. I've got several rods of various lengths so thought maybe starting with a basic off the ground cast with something's about 12'. Probably a tennis ball for a weight. What do you all think?

My dad taught me at around that age.He did it using a very basic over head thump cast using a shortish rod and a sinker with no hook and I practiced in a field.

I bought my first cane surf rod with paper delivery money when I was 10 years old in 1962. My parents weren't interested in fishing so I tried to teach myself. Ended up always casting just the standard thump, not much distance but catch fish. Would like to improve my casting form and I know that I'm not a good teacher The local surfcasting club here have annual casting days and my youngest boy (12 years) enjoys these and a its a great place to be amongst the experts to improve casting technique. Check out your local club, I'm sure there will be decent folk like our club who could assist.Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths.
