I know this seems patronising, but I am trying to help you here: please accept this music recommendation! I saw that you listed REM, New Order, Smiths. I was trying to think, which artists tend to get compared to those, and perhaps even to all three? Its difficult, especially as I want only to recommend decent-enough quality material that you may return to for repeat listenings on your MP3 player. This album is excellent, I think.
