Reading the recent post about the NT examination, it was interesting to note that some candidates may have problems in basic literacy.
I've noticed in the recent past that in many cases new trainees do not have a basic grasp of either english or maths, let alone general science and physics. The quality people who would have entered the trade 10-15 yrs ago are now going into full time further education.
Today's teenager often has a very limited spoken vocabulary as well as written.Very few can add up a simple invoice and calculate percentages without a calculator, so if the wrong key is pressed, a totally implausible figure can go unnoticed.
This all coming just at a time when the ability to cope with complex systems and understand technical instruction manuals is vital.
The inability to communicate clearly and concisely is also a major disadvantage when dealing with customers. This often leads to public mistrust.
