    Hi Paul,
I find you have to be very careful what you charge, for instance, how many times have you bought a part from a motor factors and charged it out at the RRP they quoted, only to find out later , or from the customer that it was cheaper at the main dealers. I usually have a ring round first to get an average price, you soon get to know who your best suppliers are as far as price AND quality goes and depending on whether the car's an old banger that the customer doesn't want to spend much on, so might not have the work done anyway or whether it's a good car and a good customer who doesn't mind spending a bit more for a good job. But overall I charge depending on what the parts are, what you can reasonably get away with and whether or not you want the job, many times in the past I've priced a job too high because I didn't want to do it only to get the job anyway and then you're making a bit more so you don't mind so much. But as I say, you have to be careful, you don't want to get a bad reputation but at the end of the day we're not here for a hobby, we're trying to make a living after all, and what is it about the motor trade when people want to supply their own parts! I usually say to them " you wouldn't go into a restaurant with your own meat and ask them to cook it, would you?"
    Derek
