ECU Software updating - Dealer myth or is it requiredArchived Message

This is a subject that has often intrigued me
You drive your new vehicle out the show room, after a couple of years it starts playing up, you ring the dealer and he tells you it needs a software update!.....but why?, its been running perfect for 2 years
Is it not just that the software has some how become corrupted due to maybe a poorly designed ignition system and just needs reloading?. When your own PC crashes after a couple of years you just reload the software it came with and away you go, you don't have to buy an upgrade each time
Is this a myth that the dealers put out so they can charge for selling you an update?, when all is required is you original software being reloaded......how do you know your ECU software has been updated?.....could be the original
