WARNING - logon problem with WinXP
Posted by Steve Nicholas on April 4, 2006, 8:22 am I have posted this as a warning about a possible new and extremely disabling threat to your PCs and also to see if anyone has had this and found the fix! My desktop computer is U/S at the moment - it just logs straight off if you login as any user. AVG Free Edition run in Safe Mode reports problems with the MBR on my boot drive, which is questionable, since the computer starts OK. I also found "Zangolabs.exe" sitting on the Desktop, but where it came from goodness knows. Searches on the WWW about the Login/Logoff loop come up with an issue relating to the Registry and "wsaupdate.exe". I have followed the procedure documented in several locations but this issue does not appear to apply to my problem. I ran a repair of XP but the problem persists. I am trying to avoid a complete reinstall as I have about a fortnight's work to recover everything. I will keep you posted on progress - if I can help anyone avoid this I will. Regards, Steve

Posted by Eddie Ronayne on April 6, 2006, 2:38 am, in reply to "WARNING - logon problem with WinXP" This problem is more common than you'd expect. Usually caused by XP thinking something has happened it's install... Can be caused by using crack to avoid product activation. That's what happened me - changing for 160GB from 80GB. Best way to deal with it is to use Barts PE and boot your machine "live". Take all the stuff and get them to external drive etc. Then reformat drive [NOT quick format] and a fresh install. Ghost of full install partition once a week avoids the issue. E.

Re: WARNING - logon problem with WinXP
Posted by Peter Warman on April 7, 2006, 8:14 pm, in reply to "WARNING - logon problem with WinXP" Got it fixed yet? Had a similar problem after your post, i have a Dell laptop in the workshop that is about 3 years old and has KTS and Autodata loaded, plus a host of other programs and parts CD's The problem was that the mouse would not work to click on my username to log in, had to reboot half a dozen times and bash all the keys and it finally let me click on my username, but when booted the system was painfully slow, loading Autodata was a nightmare, would have been quicker running to their head office and back with info So this afternoon i spent a couple of hours uninstalling all the rubbish, and programs i dont really use. I then run "Registry Mechanic" to remove all the obsolete registry entries, then "Windows Defender" to disable all those Start Up programs that eat memory, then Virus Scan and Defrag Finally as this laptop is not connected to the net i disabled the firewall and antivirus, then rebooted. The difference was amazing, back up to full speed as when new. KTS and Autodata fly As an aside have a look at the link below "Windows Live", i have just installed Messenger Beta 8 and uploaded all my Favourites so i can view from any PC Peter

Re: WARNING - logon problem with WinXP - FIX
Posted by Steve Nicholas on April 7, 2006, 8:17 pm, in reply to "Re: WARNING - logon problem with WinXP" I did a complete reinstall yesterday evening. I have the important stuff running again burt not my TV card or scanner. I suspect a hardware fault somewhere. BartPE is a good bit of software Eddie, and I will Ghost it as well. Good advice too Peter but I play computers in the evenings whilst half-watching Eastenders etc. I have relied on the laptop during the last few days, and (touch wood) the workshop PC seems OK as it doesn't ever go online. Regards, Steve
