Re: Setting up a website
Posted by John Wallis on September 1, 2007, 11:26 pm, in reply to "Re: Setting up a website" Follow the help that comes with the program, build a simple index page and learn how to use FTP ( File Transfer Protocol) All that means is how to transfer the page you've made to your isp provider so people can view it. Once you have mastered that then you can improve on your site content. I still firmly believe the best web sites are the simplest to read, no bells flashing lights or the like. People want to read text and information not be dazzled by rubbish. It's an interesting learning curve which I'm sure you will enjoy. Plus you can tweak it and change it as you feel like it without having to bother another person. Once you've done that you can learn about meta tags search engines robots etc. And all that means is getting your site listed on the search engines like Google etc. Hope this helps a little Cheers John Wallis

Re: Setting up a website
Posted by Alan Kane on September 2, 2007, 11:07 am, in reply to "Setting up a website" I bought a hosting package last week that comes with site builder software. It took me all of about 10 minutes to do this basic page . So far simple enough. It will be interesting to see how easy it is to develop it from here. Over the next week I will see how it goes. The only problem I had was my DNS were wrong and I didnt even know what DNS were but a few emails to the support sorted that. I dealt with WebHostingBuzz, seem pretty good so far. They registered the domain name for me too. Alan

Re: Setting up a website
Posted by Martina on September 3, 2007, 2:34 pm, in reply to "Re: Setting up a website" I originally designed and built my own site using a combination of dreamweaver and a few html templates that I downloaded from the internet and adapted. In Jan of this year though, we contacted a professional designer to do a re-design (see www.carworksni.com). The site isn't finished yet by any means, but the basic structure is there so that we can add info as needed. The designer used a package called Joomla to implement the site, which means that the site itself is content-managed. This means that he did the initial design and provided us with placeholders for relevant info, but we are able to log in at any point to the "back-end" of the site and add to/make changes to the content on the site. This is a good compromise if you want a good slick website i.e. get it initially designed professionally, but make sure that you aren't paying for every little tweak/change in text that would would like in the future. We have invested quite a bit of time registering the site with Google Adwords (specifically for the Northern Ireland region.) We get charged monthly for this advertising, but are finding that we are getting a fair proportion of new customers from this method of advertising. All the best with the new site! Martina
