Insurance/Engineering inspections

Currently shopping around for Insurance. Our current insurer includes engineering inspections. One broker has told me I can arrange my own inspections. Anyone doing it? I wonder if it is worth the hassle, especially in the event of a claim.

Hi Phil,
We have 2 seperate inspections done, 1 guy comes once a year and gives a report, the other guy comes twice ayear, inspects and repairs.
I don't think it's worth the hassle to do it yourself - too much aggro if something goes wrong.

We arrange our own inspections, having had a nightmare with a company previously appointed by the insurance company.
There engineer? condemned one of our ramps 48 hours after it had had new lift nuts fitted, for excessive play in the lift nuts, so we recalled the company who had just repaired it, and he showed us that the movement was minimal, well within tolerances.
Another thing they used to do was not turn up 6 monthly like they were contracted to do, but still mark us down as having been inspected, and swear blind they had been, until you asked for copies of the reports. Good job we record our own dates etc. What would happen in this instance if their was an accident??.
We now use a trusted company of our choosing, who when they find a fault are also capable of repairing it. Andy

We also arrange our own inspections as our last insurance inspections part of our insurance policy was exceeding £650.00. For £300.00 we get an annual service & inspection on our screw compressor and another specialist company inspects our ramps. Just make sure you file away the inspection certificates. The previous insurance inspector used to write off the wire ropes on our MOT ramp when they were less than a year old, like Andy a complete nightmare.

We arrange our own and done so for the last 10 years. The company that repairs our ramps ect charges £80.00 per year but cannot do compressor this, another company does at £60.00 per year. Used to cost me £300 per year by insurance company recommended Guy. This I stopped when he once sent me new certificate without any inspection. This is a matter you cannot scrimp on if owt goes wrong HSE will come down on you like a ton of bricks.

Hi Phil

I am now using Snelling Garage equip he will come in twice a year and service/inspect all ramps, jacking beam and compressor so long as i have an agreement with him AXA are happy as insurers.

Have changed to him as he is local to our area and cheaper than MSI, if you want his number let me know and i'll find it.

Got to admit we do our own repairs, lifts are all hydraulic so not much service needed. Will give them a call. Already got the existing company down £150 by going direct.

Hi All,
While it's a bit risky, you don't have to have an independent body for inspections, you can self inspect, the HSE state that a 'competent person' has to carry out the inspections, & document them.

A Competent Person can be defined as “A person who has such appropriate practical and theoretical knowledge and experience of the equipment to be thoroughly examined or inspected as will enable them to detect defects or weaknesses and to assess their importance in relation to the safety and continued use of the equipment".

I think this is down to correct procedure of inspections & acting on faults found, & showing that you have via an inspection book. The same way as you would for your COSHH inspection.
