M.O.T Traffic Light Scheme

Hi we have just received our traffic light rating under the new M.O.T Testing Acessment scheme, just wondered if anybody else has had there's, we were quite pleased to get the green light. has anybody got a opinion on this scheme.

It appears from the graph that not one station got 100% yet we have no feed back on our shortfalls. Iam in support of anthing that improves testing standards but this can only happen if we are advised on where we are going wrong. Even if it is because the loo roll had run out in the customers gents.

You should have been left a from that listed the shortfalls/suggestions at the time of the visit. If you did not receive that you should contact your area office.
However, I have heard of one or two stations who received a clean sheet who are still in the low green and they are unable to find out the reason why. Not very helpful if you are trying to raise standards and achieve a better rating is it!

we are also a "green" garage until they change the goal posts again.

Hi all we are also green garage (lower end ) we did not recieve any info on why we were lower green.

We are not a test station, so not directly involved. But I am curious, can the public access this info? If not what value does it have?

It's basically so VOSA can work out how may site visits you get, most garage's were in the green those with a higher score will get visited more often so isn't for the public as one mot is supposed to be the same as one in another garage though we know it isn't because people apply the rules differently usually by being way to hard & failing things that should be advised.

Hi,

It's true that MoT test standards will vary from station to station. This isn't always because one station is 'right' and the other is 'wrong'. One tester's 'pass & advise' could be another's 'fail' How bad a corroded brake pipe needs to be, to justify a fail, can depend on how many burst ones you've actually seen.
Personal experience and product knowledge play a large part. No mechanic can know everythng about every make and model. In the past 34 years I've tested in excess of 25,000 cars and seen standards change quite a lot since the 1970s.
Some items that were once a certain fail in the eyes of VOSA (It was the Ministry of Transport when I started, then Dept.of Environment, then Dept.of Transport.....) are not even considered testable items now.

Hi Matt

Standards will always vary, but pass and advise means repair needed SOON, it not pass and forget !! So its it the difference between doing the repair and not doing it, its just do you pay now or in a few weeks. It's still going to cost the same in the long run (unless you are selling then MOT standards don't apply and you would need do in anyway !! )

Just wondered if anyone has had a second "risk assesment" yet? We had a visit yesterday and had to go through the exact same checks & questions as the first time which was just a few months ago. I could understand it if we had been assesed as high "risk" but our score put us on the border of green/amber. Would have thought that the "red" stations were the ones to target, maybe we make the best coffee?

We have still got to look forward to our first inspection (we have only been running for a month or so). What kind of questions etc can we expect? How long are they on site for, how are the questions and time split between AE and NT?

Numair,

If you have only been operating for one month as a testing station, many of the checks made during a 'traffic light scheme' inspection for existing stations, would have been done during the pre-approval inspection.
Follow-up inspections may be based on the data gathered by MoT computeristaion.
