Scary or what #

take alook at the link (hope it works) this appeared in my local paper today it seems abit scary and a huge can of legal worms could open up here as well as a few major cock ups.

"If changing all four brake pads and discs on an average car a person could save more than £100." Lets see how that works out with a new type passat or similar car

i started my apprenticeship in a garage that did that called Motorsave
the customers saved a fortune and the boss went bust

THis has been tried in the Portsmouth/Southampton
areas may times.They all went bust.Blokes cocking
up thier own cars which then blocked ramps for days.Everyone wanted saturdays and sundays so there was no income(or barely any)Monday to Friday.Who is going to stand there and go through
risk assessments every time someone turns up.
All tools laid on are going to get wrecked.Then
the HSE turn up to find grinders being used without face masks/goggles,wearing trainers etc etc.That bloke running it will get fined big time.

Hi Kelly someone tried it round our way years ago and like the others packed it up,and that was in the days when cars were less hi tec,no chance now ,even i have to think sometimes what am i taking on when i open the bonnet of some cars.Martin

Was also tried here a couple of years ago, fully kitted out workshop with ramps, tyre fitting and balancing gear, compressor etc.

Think it lasted about 6 months before it went belly up .

This was tried in quite a large premises back in the 1970s,I can't remember exactly where but Milton Keynes area seems to come to mind. They advertised that skilled mechanics would also be available to assist 'where necessary'.
From memory, it gradually turned into a conventional independent repairer. I think it had a catchy one word name. So memorable that I've forgotten it. Bear in mind that cars were a lot easier to fix in those days, although we didn't know it at the time.

Hi All

When I was apprenticed in early 80's my bosses son tried the same thing . Had to pay 2 techs overtime to oversee work & offer foc help on Sundays, customers just paid for facilities by the hour. Jobs had to be completed so that ramps were available for proper work during the week.

Its a long time ago and I can't remember how long it lasted but it wasn't long!!
Bear in mind that health & safety and duty care of care etc was not that well developed then - it would be a legal minefield now!!

Imagine all the work when their cars go belly up! What an opportunity for a bodyshop too - all those prangs because of badly fitted brakes!

Think this was called "MKOK". From memory they had some bays set aside for DIYers and some for their own work. (in the early eighties)Cant gaurantee that my memory is any better than yours though!!

Hi Phil

I did wonder about that but would it be worth the hassle, where would you start after all what have they touched and cocked up as well along the way you know whta electronics are like and then if they went there they obviously havn't got the money to pay us in the first place.

Time will tell.

Back to the 80s again a local fast fit an huddersfield tried this didn't last long they tried it at weekends when mondays came they were unable to work for non runners and immobilised vehicles taking up ramp spaces & parking spaces.

when diy`ers have a go themselves, it serves them right when they cock things up and it costs them double in the end. when they snap bolts or round them off or loose things and then ask us to fix them afterwards, they still lie to us about what they have done themselves to save face, and that all makes our job that much harder.
not to mention that in this day and age, we all spend a lot of time scratching our heads and we are supposed to be the experts (well i do anyway)
