For 35 years I have thought that this trade needed licencing/regulation.
To do my part I spent a fortune on BS5750 and then ISO 2002, was a member of AA appointed garages, A Bosch service agent and then Bosch Car Service, Member of Motor Codes, all mt staff trained in gas handling requirements (remember that?)
It took me 35 years to realize that it was all a total waste of money, everyone efficient in sending invoices for their'policing' but doing absolutely nothing to improve our Industry.
I for one see no benefit in yet some other half baked scheme being suggested.

When i first read this about 30 people had viewed and signed count was about 100

Now 191 views and signed count at 170!!

"At 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament"

hmm don,t see it will get to a debate.

Hi Ed

I am with you on this, after 40 years of trading I have also spent thousands on schemes (tried nearly all of them) from Kite Mark with Unipart Car Care up to Trust my Garage being the most recent (RMI)

This year I have decided to declutter myself from all the schemes and stop paying subscriptions, remove all logo's and signs.....stop promoting companies products for FREE

I have regular customers and most new ones come via reputation or word of mouth (the best type), I do not think the sign's or an office wall full of certificates (I have a few) have ever made a difference, customers just want to find a trustworthy garage with a good name and have an honest chat about their requirements (male or female)

The UK automotive market is massive, you are never going to be able to licence it, all the schemes we sign up to are NEVER going to stop the dodgy ones trading. How often have we seen it on Watchdog, Trading Standards reluctantly get involved they may get a successful prosecution only for them to pop up a few month later under a different name

If the petition did reach 100,000 then who would debate it in Parliament? a hand full of politicians on either side who know nothing of our trade? You can see how it would go....

How much to implement: £25,000,000

How many to officially police the scheme: 10,000 around the country

Can we stop the bad ones trading easily: NO

...........NEXT!

We need a pay rise......APPROVED

Totally agree with Pete. We need an independent garage scheme run by independents. Fat chance.

We all pool a couple of grand each and then have massive buying power to by-pass the factors....

Hi,

I have to agree with Ed and Peter. I joined the IMI in 1985, they were talking about licensing garages then. My dad said 'They've been talking about it for years, they'll never do it'. I was a bit dissapointed with his statement, but now I realise he was probably right.
I've signed the petition because I do agree with it, plus it doesn't cost anything to sign it.

That sounds like the way forward

The motor trade does get some unfair criticism, many customers think they are being overcharged when their vehicle is being serviced, but much of this is because the customer is unaware how complex their vehicle is

Many will opt for the cheaper service, fast fits and independents offering a service for £89.00. This will get you business but important items are generally overlooked like brake fluid changes, hard to get to diesel fuel filters / pollen filters and timing belt changes

After a few years these service items are well overdue with perhaps discs and pads also being required, they then get a quote for a £1,000 to bring their vehicle back up to standard, that's when they start saying we are overcharging and trying to rip them off with unnecessary repair work

So educating the customer would be a good start. Perhaps a national database that Vehicle Service history could be entered into (by registered / validated workshops) This would help other workshops know what has been done and when service items are due. If a vehicle has not been serviced for 2/3 years then perhaps a reminder from DVSA

Hi Guys

I agree with the comments on all these regulating associations an approval agency's being a total con but still think this trade needs licencing

You can be untrained & inexperienced yet repair the brakes or steering on a coach carrying 70 people up the motorway at 60 mph but you need a licence to drive a mobility scooter for one which can only do 9 mph !! (over 8 mph needs a licence)

there is no consistency .....

Licencing will only provide "Jobs for the boys" Nice salaries,company cars and swanning around the country charging for the licencing for a small few who are in the right social network. Fred in a shed will still be happily carrying on as before and genuine garages who do a good job will pick up the tab. Forced to charge more to cover the extra cost of licencing/training/certification/admin which will increase inflationary pressures. Sorry to be cynical but after 25yrs running a garage it makes you a little cynical.
