No , that's the point The transponder / key have no bearing on the instrument pack.
If you access immobiliser system you will have no dtc faults because the key is working correct.
try this , remove and disconnect the instrument cluster.
now try and start the car. it will fire once and then just crank and crank but will not fire.
communicate with immobiliser and Bet you will have no DTC faults logged.
plug the cluster back in and it will start.
once started you can disconnect the cluster and it will keep going.
you may have dtc faults logged in body control and engine ECU about communication errors with instrument pack.
There is a SPS update needed if DTC P1612 is setting intermittently. This was fixed on late 2002 vehicles at production stage.
Basically the Timing sequence and handshake between engine ecu and immobiliser control was not long enough and if you turned the ignition on a bit fast or the signal picked up any interface you could catch them out.
They basically extended the time and the amount times the ecu would try and make a successfully handshake.
But the SVS light would then be flashing....
just check the connections on the cluster and put some trionic cleaner on the contacts. May require new cluster but try this first.
