Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 16v 2002 (52) - Non start, possible dash fault, MIL fashes fast and dim #

well I have never seen this before, the car wont start, but the engine mil light is the only dash light on and flashes very fast and is dim, got no comms with ecu, then when you try again all the dash lights are on as normal including the mil, then they all start flashing and the throtle body keeps starting & stoping, if I hold the key in the start postion it will start and run and after a few seconds will run without me holding the key, then I get comms but no codes stored!!!!!!!!!! I will have to have this recoved to workshop but has one seen this before. ray

Hi, I know that they suffer from bad connections at the back of the dash (there is a TSB on it)
This usually causes a non start. May be worth a look.HTH

thanks for that i have got the car in next week I will check that out! just me being a bit thick but how does the dash stop a car starting !!!

Technically not correct

The Instrument cluster , Body control Module and engine ECU are all married and matched to the Immobiliser control(separate control unit).

as well as checking the transponder key if any of the above control units do not match or it fails to communicate with them the engine will NOT start......

ok if there where a fault with that I would be getting a code to that effect IE wrong key, transponder fault. had another look at this car and I feel it is losing a earth or feed, I have put another earth from the engine ecu to engine and so far so good as the car has behaved it self today try more on monday. ray

No , that's the point The transponder / key have no bearing on the instrument pack.

If you access immobiliser system you will have no dtc faults because the key is working correct.

try this , remove and disconnect the instrument cluster.

now try and start the car. it will fire once and then just crank and crank but will not fire.

communicate with immobiliser and Bet you will have no DTC faults logged.

plug the cluster back in and it will start.

once started you can disconnect the cluster and it will keep going.

you may have dtc faults logged in body control and engine ECU about communication errors with instrument pack.

There is a SPS update needed if DTC P1612 is setting intermittently. This was fixed on late 2002 vehicles at production stage.

Basically the Timing sequence and handshake between engine ecu and immobiliser control was not long enough and if you turned the ignition on a bit fast or the signal picked up any interface you could catch them out.

They basically extended the time and the amount times the ecu would try and make a successfully handshake.

But the SVS light would then be flashing....

just check the connections on the cluster and put some trionic cleaner on the contacts. May require new cluster but try this first.

Hi

Remove instrument panel
Remove wiring harness connector
Fit spacing pads between connector and housing and refit connector
re-fit instrument panel

But, Reading the Original post does the following sound like a cluster fault. ??

I have seen cluster faults causing non start and various dash light problems, But I have not seen any causing the throttle body to click on and off, I think the 2 that i have had those types of problems with have been faulty ecu's. ??

Hi All
i have had one of these doing exactly the same took me ages to figure it out thinking along the lines already mentioned instruments and immo kept going round in circles we had faults in engine and immo and instruments we were lucky enough to geta donor car and swapparts it turned out to be engine ecu.
I gave RMIF helpline all the details as i was in talks with them regarding the immo circuit and instruments.

When fault was present i lost comms with engine ecu.

Tony You are absolutely correct.....

I got distracted by Marks post about immobiliser info I forgot to read to original post fully.

Ray it will be the ECU at fault common failure and have seen it a few times....

You will need Tech 2 with SPS to fit new unit.

You can fit 2nd hand as long as the unit is reset before removal from donor vehicle.

I recently had similar symptoms on 3 cyl version, engine ecu was cause of throttle body cycling and intermittant loss of comms.

Darren, you seem very knowledgable on this. Another garage has asked me to fit a used engine ECU that has not been reset. They have donor security code and transponder chip. Can I reset on a different vehicle?
I have recently added TIS approval to Tech2 still learning basics.

Sorry the answer is NO...

The Immobiliser 2 system was taken over from the Astra–G and has been expanded by additional device identifications.

The engine control unit identifies the body control module and the instrument module via the CAN bus (V bus and E bus).

After switching on the ignition, the engine control unit waits for the identification of the body control module and the instrument module. The identification is a 16–bit code (vehicle ID). The vehicle ID is determined by the engine control unit. The engine functions are only available if the vehicle ID is correct. If this is not correct, error codes are set (P1615, BCM, P1615 instrument module) and the immobiliser comes into effect.

The engine ECU is reset via the programming menu within the immobiliser control unit. Therefore the code you have is not valid for your car, only the donor car.

Maybe some ECU repair specialist can make the engine ECU free running?????????

Thanks for that Darren. I have sucessfully reset an engine ecu, tranferred to another vehicle for test and back. Suspected this problem with used unit. As it is another garage, problem is not mine, I would have found the answer before purchase.

you wont belive it had another corsa with throtle pedal faults this time, switch ingition on touch the pedal and hey presto the dash starts flashing, and the throtle body cycling put another earth on to the ecu and perfect, I was also only getting comms with the engine not running once started I lost comms but with earth fitted I had no comms promblems the earth must go the battery itself not engine or body. ray
