The secondary air system only operates under very specific Air-Flow / Engine Load / Engine Rev conditions , which is why you may have to drive considerable distances to get the conditions for the fault to occur. Minor Air-Leaks are the main problem , however I have been told that it can occur due to an out of calibration MAF sensor , but I have not been able to confirm this personally. Best of Luck
