If this customer has gone to the expense of taking the old engine out and putting the new one in, then I would have thought he would go that little bit further and stumped up for a CPS and a bit of your time. For the sake of a few squids, he would feel a bit of an a..e if that engine was whipped out and another one put in only to find that it would have worked in the first place. Don't think it will though
