Went through it again after studying the wiring diagram and noticed that there should have been a live feed coming from the transmission range switch going into the relay supplying the reverse light solenoid and the transistor. Checked this at the relay and only getting 340mV so checked at the switch itself and got the same. Checked supplies and grounds to switch ( all ok) and replaced switch. Starts everytime now.
