What equipment are you using to exract DTCs?

The reason I ask is you seem to have mixed up 2 formats of DTC?

P codes consist of 1 letter and 4 numbers, so either you have made a typing error or your scantool is reprting incorrect codes.

VAG DTCs usually consit of 5 numbers so is it P1xxx or is it 16409. I cannot find a deffinition for 16409! I would suggest you try using VCDS or Autologic if you can get your hands on one to confirm DTCs.

And as Mark says look at operation of valve timing solenoids.
